Last year, we announced the general availability of the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Operations Insights service for on-premises Oracle databases. Today, we’re excited to announce that Operations Insights service now supports Oracle databases on bare metal, virtual machines (VMs), and Exadata Cloud service in OCI.

OCI Operations Insights service is part of the Oracle Cloud Observability and Management platform. Using Operations Insights, you can gain 360-degree insight into the infrastructure and database investments to reduce cost of operations by using machine learning-based and data-driven capacity planning. It also allows you to perform proactive performance management and improve your application throughput by tracking and trending SQL running performance across the enterprise.

Operations Insights service key features

Capacity Planning: Trend and forecast resource requirements

As a database fleet administrator or capacity planner, you can use the Capacity Planning application to perform the following use case goals at the compartment level for both CPU and storage resources:

  • A unified user interface to analyze multiple Oracle Database services deployed within OCI and on-premises

  • Trend and forecast resource demand using up to 25 months of historical data

  • Tree map visualization of entire fleet

  • See growth patterns over time for the entire fleet and each member

  • Quickly isolate the largest, most utilized, and fastest growing databases

  • Identify underutilized and overallocated footprint for right sizing

Insights into SQL performance

Using the Oracle SQL Warehouse function of Operations Insights, you can analyze the SQL performance problems for enterprise-wide applications across a fleet of databases. Operations Insights also provides trends and key insights to SQL performance issues, helping you to be proactive in avoiding future problems.

Use cases

  • Analyze the performance of SQL based on several categories: Degrading, inefficient, variant, and with plan changes

  • Find whether the top SQLs are based on database time across databases and if their performance is stable or worsening

  • Correlate performance and plan changes

  • Compare and differentiate plans for the same SQL

  • Aggregate and compare across databases
