The Tech4InclusiveLearning event, held in collaboration with Oracle Academy and Northern Innovation and Empowerment Hub based in Garissa, Kenya, focused on building digital skills in marginalized communities, with participants learning how to write and run SQL statements using Oracle APEX

Oracle Academy and Northern Innovation and Empowerment Hub recently held an exciting workshop for young women from different parts of Garissa County, Kenya. The event brought together 16 students from local vocational institutions and colleges who were eager to learn new tech skills and explore careers in technology.

This workshop was part of a Tech4Inclusive learning initiative, which focuses on students in remote and marginalized areas having access to quality tech education. For many of the girls, it was their first time learning about databases and engaging with industry tech tools.

Using Oracle APEX, the participants were introduced to SQL, learning how to write simple SQL statements, use logical and comparison operators, understand how SQL follows rules when solving problems, and add data to a database using INSERT statements. Learning SQL using Oracle APEX gave the students a clear, practical way to understand how data is stored, organized, and used — skills that are needed in many jobs today.

The day was about learning programming and inspiring confidence, demonstrating to the girls that even in a marginalized area like Garissa, they can be part of the tech world and shape the future. Oracle Academy works to increase the engagement of all students, including the under-represented, by providing educators with teaching and learning resources that make technology engaging and accessible. We provide access to the latest tools and technologies to help educators increase student success and develop career-ready skills.
