APEX World is the opportunity to get acquainted with or deepen knowledge of Oracle’s unique own low-code environment, Oracle APEX. The two-day conference offers networking with colleagues, the possibility to share experiences, and the opportunity to meet representatives of companies (and their supporting partners), that successfully deploy Oracle APEX. The 14th edition of APEX World was held in Amersfoort on March 22, 2024.

APEX World is organized by the nlOUG, the Dutch Oracle User Group (nlOUG), an Oracle Users Association of Oracle users based in the Dutch language area. The nlOUG operates independent of Oracle.

In a world run by the rise of artificial intelligence, it is essential to not only understand the way we develop our applications, but also explore the impact of AI on the applications themselves. In this year's paper selection, the organization focused on sessions that explore this fascinating theme in depth.

A delegation from Oracle delivers the keynote speeches every year. The program highlighted inspiring keynotes from leading speakers such as Marc Sewtz, Senior Director, Software Development; Carsten Czarski, Database Architect; and Menno Hoogendijk, Database Developer. A varied range of parallel sessions during both days covered customer cases and deep dive and hands-on sessions to improve the attendees’ skills, as well as a special student track on the second day.

Student track

The APEX World track for students and teachers offered a glimpse into developing with Oracle APEX. Pieter van den Broek and co-host Brent Schillemans from iAdvise hosted the workshop. The enthusiastic group of 13 students and three teachers was separated into a beginner session and an advanced session. The beginners got an explanation from Pieter about APEX, after which they went on to build their own first application together, a social media app. The more advanced students, led by Brent, went straight into building an app for registering party games and were introduced to new APEX 23.2 features. After the track, students were welcome to join the rest of the conference for lunch and the regular tracks of the afternoon program and could meet with other attendees.

Additional track by Zeno van der Zalm

After the student track, an additional track featured programming with the Finch Robot using Oracle APEX, by Zeno van der Zalm, an IT teacher.

His session addressed the question, have you always wondered how you can introduce APEX to high school students in a fun way? Participants joined this session to see the educational concept behind it. The application created with APEX controls the Finch Robot so students could compete with each other in various challenges such as racing, football, art and the famous king of the court competition. Students learned how to adjust the controls/buttons to become the best at every challenge.

In addition to customizing the controls/buttons, students learned to interact with the database by creating SQL queries and RESTful APIs to store and retrieve data. The data is shown on the application itself or on the display of the Finch Robot. Ultimately, students explored the possibilities of APEX in a fun way. Hopefully we can inspire these young people to become the new programmers of the future!

Oracle Academy

Oracle Academy, Oracle’s global philanthropic educational program, is open to educators around the world to advance technology education, skills, innovation, and diversity and inclusion.

The program gives students the knowledge to master the same unbreakable low code platform industry experts use. APEX is the world’s most popular enterprise cloud-based development platform, whose superpower is requiring very little code. It enables users to build scalable, secure enterprise apps, with world-class features, that can be deployed anywhere ― on premises or in the cloud.

Oracle Academy provides Institutional members and their students with free access to Oracle APEX for knowledge building and hands-on practice. Our Oracle Academy APEX platform provides educators with a dedicated instance designed specifically for classroom use with up to 99 students, providing the perfect environment to support labs and applied practice for our database curriculum as well as many Oracle Academy Education Bytes.

Whether it’s to build a new cloud and mobile app, or convert a spreadsheet into an app, with APEX, developers can quickly create and deploy apps that solve real problems and provide immediate value. APEX developers have created a wealth of solutions for problems large and small, turning ideas into compelling apps.

Developers don’t need to be experts in a vast array of technologies to deliver sophisticated solutions. They can focus on solving problems and use the features of APEX to take care of the rest.
