Oracle Academy was pleased to host a bootcamp for Sub-Saharan Africa educators on August 27, 2026. The bootcamp aimed to empower educators with the tools and resources they need to leverage Java, Oracle Cloud, and AI for more innovative and impactful teaching.
Themed ‘Modern Java: How It Still Powers the World’s Biggest Applications in the AI Era’, the three-hour bootcamp event provided participants with practical insights, hands-on demonstrations, and opportunities to engage with Oracle experts while exploring Oracle Academy resources for teaching and learning.
Bekere Amassoma, Oracle Academy Program Manager, welcomed the 200-plus participants and thanked them for making the time to attend and for the commitment they show every day to developing the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and technology leaders across the region. She stated that we live in a time of extraordinary technological change, with artificial intelligence reshaping how we work, learn, and build businesses, and the theme could not be timelier. She added that Java may have been around for many years, but it remains one of the world’s most important programming languages. It powers the systems behind global banking platforms, telecommunications networks, e-commerce services, enterprise applications, cloud platforms, and many of the digital experiences we rely on every day. It is trusted because it is robust, secure, scalable, and designed for real-world applications.
William Mcrae, Principal Instructor, Oracle Academy EMEA, introduced the educators to Oracle Academy’s free teaching resources, including Oracle Academy curriculum and learning pathways, Education Bytes, workshops and interactive tools, all designed to support high-quality technology education.
Jeffry Amachree, Master Principal Account Cloud Engineer, Oracle, facilitated the training session on Java and AI. Educators learned practical ways to incorporate Java into their courses, which in turn will equip their students with career-ready, industry-relevant skills. His training covered critical areas including:
- Evolution of Java
- Latest Java features
- Java in AI and enterprise applications
- Java in education
- Java as the backbone (Java can orchestrate AI models, APIs, data, security, and business logic)
- From Java application to AI-powered application (showing what adding GenAI to a familiar Java application looks like)
- Career pathways for Java developers
- What should we teach the next generation? (helping educators translate the AI shift into practical student skills)
Later, Oracle Academy instructor Guy Edaba led the ‘How To Use Oracle Academy Java and AI Resources in the Classroom’ session, in which he highlighted Oracle Academy Java full courses, Education Bytes, and workshops through a live demo.
Lorna Juma, Oracle Academy Program Manager, wrapped up the bootcamp by moderating the interactive and engaging Q & A session and encouraged participants to continue to invest in their professional development journeys.
