Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE) – Department of Economic Informatics and Cybernetics, recently collaborated with Oracle Academy and Oracle Volunteer colleagues to deliver a workshop “Build a Social Media App using Oracle APEX.”
Held on May 26, 2026, the event engaged 67 master’s students from the Database Master program in an interactive learning experience focused on modern low-code application development and emerging AI capabilities.
Oracle volunteer colleagues Andreea Munteanu, Principal Member of the Oracle APEX Dev Team, and Roxana Popa, Oracle Data Developer, hosted the workshop in response to Professor Anda Belciu’s request. The workshop provided students with an opportunity to explore Oracle APEX, and understand how it is helping organizations build scalable, secure, and data-driven applications faster than ever before.
The speakers introduced the core concepts of Oracle APEX and familiarized the audience with the AI capabilities available within the platform. They then guided the students through the development of a social media application, demonstrating the use of key APEX components and declarative features while building the application collaboratively.
The technical introduction to Oracle APEX covered several key concepts that helped position the platform within today’s technology landscape. Students explored:
• The positioning of Oracle APEX within the low-code development ecosystem
• Oracle APEX architecture and core platform components
• Integration with and management of multiple data sources
These sessions provided participants with a strong foundation before moving into practical application development activities.
Students get immediate practice in hands-on workshop
Following the introductory presentations, students participated in a hands-on workshop where they worked alongside Oracle specialists and university faculty to build a social media application using Oracle APEX. Through guided exercises, students gained practical experience in creating application pages, managing data models, configuring user interactions, and leveraging Oracle APEX’s declarative development capabilities.
The collaborative format allowed participants to apply concepts immediately while developing a deeper understanding of how modern low-code platforms can be used to rapidly create business applications.
“The event provided a great opportunity for students to practice their skills under the supervision and guidance of the Oracle team. They always bring engaging workshops and the latest insights into the APEX environment. Thank you to the team for their continuous support and openness to innovation!” said Associate Professor Anda Belciu.
AI in Oracle APEX adds another dimension to learning
In addition to the application-building workshop, attendees were introduced to the growing role of artificial intelligence within application development through a live demonstration of “Build an AI Interactive Report in Oracle APEX.” The demo showcased how AI-powered capabilities can enhance data exploration, reporting, and decision-making experiences while reducing development complexity.
“As someone who didn’t have any experience with APEX, this workshop helped me learn most of its main functionalities. The fact that it is a practical workshop and explanations were quite clear made it easy for me to understand some simple concepts,” said Barbu Ambra, student participant.
Students gained valuable insights into how AI and low-code technologies can work together to create more intelligent and user-friendly applications, preparing them for future opportunities in the rapidly evolving technology sector.
“Students were highly engaged throughout the APEX event, contributing to an interactive discussion. Both students and lecturers expressed strong interest in APEX and its AI capabilities, creating a dynamic and collaborative environment that facilitated an effective and engaging workshop. I’m delighted to support the new generation of APEX developers in building successful careers and creating impactful application,” said Oracle expert volunteer Andreea Munteanu.
“Together, we built an application from scratch, and it was fantastic to see how engaged and interested everyone was throughout the session. The workshop was very interactive, with lots of great questions and discussions, which made sharing our knowledge even more enjoyable,” said Roxana Popa.
The event demonstrated the value of combining academic learning with practical, industry-relevant experiences. By working directly with Oracle technologies, students strengthened their technical skills while gaining exposure to tools and development approaches widely used in modern enterprises.
As an active Oracle Academy member institution, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies Department of Economic Informatics and Cybernetics continues to provide students with opportunities to engage with innovative technologies and develop the competencies they need to succeed in today’s digital economy.
