As part of the new Oracle Academy Ambassador Program, Cary Milsap, Oracle Distinguished Product Manager, North America, gave a guest lecture for graduate level students at an Oracle Academy member university in Colorado. In the university’s Database System Management course, students are exposed to a host of different database concepts while learning industry-ready skills.
Cary started the session by discussing his 30-plus year career with Oracle, and then spent time discussing various methods of database management implementation, providing students with invaluable information. He then discussed how to best capture workforce opportunities with database knowledge, the nuances of consulting for a large company, and how graduates can leverage their database knowledge to help solve real-world challenges for customers. He also explored the importance of flexibility when problem solving, which can help all involved navigate industry challenges collaboratively.
Cary gave one important piece of advice in discussing the applicability database courses have to a variety of different industries: Having experience with a well-used and intricate skill set is important, but one also must meet the demands of customers to create success.
