An interesting interactive online event took place on November 20, 2024, at the request of Associate Professor Iuliana Botha, PhD, at Faculty of Economic Cybernetics, Statistics and Informatics, Bucharest University of Economic Studies. At the event, 54 master’s degree students had the opportunity to listen to and discuss with Oracle colleagues:

  • Camelia Ditescu, Oracle Academy Program Manager
  • Piotr Kurzynoga, Open Source Data Services Specialist – Oracle NoSQL (45 min.) – Out of this world experience with Oracle NoSQL
  • Tim Goh (Starring Guest), OCI NoSQL Principal Product Manager
  • Roxana Popa, Data Development Specialist – What is Oracle Spatial and why would you use it? Examples of Spatial data and how to work with it (30 min.)
  • Andrei Manoliu, Principal Product Manager (60 min) – JSON, Graph and Vectors

In the first presentation topic, Piotr and Tim who presented to the students on how Oracle NoSQL is an amazing piece of technology often left behind. In this session, Piotr discussed the requirements of modern applications and how Oracle NoSQL addresses those. Showcasing a live end-to-end demo with single digit latency and active global replication among others was a cherry on top to show how this solution can work in practice, taking us all the way to space.

“The education sector is where it all begins for most of us, we bring the knowledge that we come across throughout our career. Personally, I believe sharing real-world use-cases and inspiring the future workforce to think big is of utmost importance! This amazing session, and the number of questions and interactions, only proves this point,” said Piotr.

“This group of students is simply incredible! They’re not only attentive but also brimming with fascinating questions. What’s more, some of them are already buzzing with excitement about creating projects using Oracle NoSQL database. The energy and enthusiasm in this class are absolutely infectious,” said Tim.

The second topic of our session with the students focused on Oracle Spatial. “We explored the significance of spatial data, covered basic concepts and explored various maps visualization options offered by Oracle. The students’ active engagement, as evidenced by their numerous questions, was encouraging. It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with Iuliana Botha, and I’m happy to see that professors expose their students to diverse perspectives within their fields of study,” said Roxana.

At the end of the day Andrei discussed about how structured and unstructured data don’t always mean different platforms, and explained how we can have a Converged Database, a database that has native support for all modern data types, analytics, and the latest development paradigms built into one product.

His session was focused on Oracle Database 23ai, where we had JSON and relational unification with the JSON Relational Duality view; we also had Graph and relational unification using Property graph views and vector and relational working together for semantic searching through the available data. “I enjoy every session I have with students because they are energetic and curious. In this session, although it was late in the day, they still asked so many questions and they wanted to know more,” said Andrei.

“I really enjoyed the presentations at this webinar. The first presentation was really out of this world… Piotr and Tim were amazing. I was speechless, while my students flooded the Q&A section. Most of them are usually not that active, so it was a good barometer of their interest on NoSQL databases. Piotr and Tim complemented each other very well and made a fascinating presentation. The delight of their speech was the practical part, where Piotr showed us how they manage vehicle monitoring data,” said Iuliana Botha.

“With the presentation focused on the spatial data management in Oracle, Roxana launched a new wave of questions. My students already had a background in spatial databases, so their interest in comparative analysis made me very happy. Moreover, Roxana was our student some time ago, so she knew very well how to structure her presentation and how to combine it with practical examples, in order to keep the students very attentive.”

She continued, “Although he was the last speaker, Andrei brilliantly managed to keep the audience involved. He highlighted some of Oracle 23ai facilities to handle semi- and unstructured data. His examples perfectly emphasize the aspects explained by using attractive data from Formula 1 races.”

For the success of this workshop, we want to say “THANK YOU” to the team who worked together, as well as the professor and students.
