Oracle Volunteers Kenya and Oracle Academy hosted an impactful Pink October event focused on raising breast cancer awareness among young women, bringing together female students from Riara University and Multimedia University of Kenya. The event, held in partnership with Women4Cancer, aimed to educate, empower, and inspire women to take proactive steps towards breast health and awareness.
The event, which took place on October 30, 2024, at the Oracle Kenya office, covered essential topics such as risk factors, prevention strategies, and screening methods. The Women4Cancer health professionals shared insights on lifestyle choices that can influence breast cancer risk and highlighted the importance of regular self-exams and screenings. Attendees learned that early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes and survival rates.
“Learning never stops,” said Madam Florence Kimani, computer science lecturer at Riara University. “I enjoyed the talk on breast cancer. The speakers did an excellent job. Moreover, the sessions were quite educative, practical in nature, and an eye opener. As a learning institution, we are happy to have partnered with Oracle Academy, to avail such diverse opportunities to our students. Creating a better world for our students and faculty requires such teamwork, partnerships and collaboration that need an entire army to work together to build a better world. I also want to thank the Women4Cancer team for going out of their way to educate as many as possible to transform lives by giving back to the community.”
The students left with both vital knowledge and a renewed sense of community. They actively participated in discussions and shared their own experiences, creating a supportive environment where everyone felt empowered to prioritize their health and look out for one another.
“The session was truly inspiring, a beautiful event raising awareness on breast cancer and creating a safe space for us to learn and ask questions. It was deeply empowering,” said Patricia Muriira, a Bachelor of Science student studying software engineering at Multimedia University of Kenya.
“Attending this event was both inspiring and deeply informative. Learning practical self-check techniques, knowing what signs to watch out for, understanding key cancer risk factors, and exploring available screening options in Kenya highlighted the importance of proactive health care. I felt more equipped and encouraged to share this important knowledge within my community to raise awareness and contribute to early detection efforts,” said Michelle Mokeira, computer science student, Riara University.
We extend our gratitude to Oracle Kenya Volunteers, Women4Cancer, Riara University, and Multimedia University of Kenya who helped make this Pink October event possible. Through this initiative, Oracle Kenya made a meaningful impact, offering female students the resources and information they need to protect their health and champion breast cancer awareness. Together with our institutional partners, we are building a stronger, more informed community committed to education, health, knowledge-sharing, resilience, and support.
