Oracle Academy is proud to collaborate with organizations around the world to deliver engaging, hands-on learning experiences that introduce students to the power and possibilities of computing. Through our freely available workshop materials—including a Preparation Checklist, Facilitator Guide, Full Workshop Curriculum, and Tutorials with Solutions—educators can deliver high-impact, project-based computing lessons that are both accessible and fun.

On May 15, 2025, Oracle Academy member Pacxa, a leading IT solutions provider based in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, hosted an inspiring Java workshop at Leilehua High School, welcoming students from nearby Wahiawā Middle School, a Title I school in Central Oʻahu. With over half of its student population coming from low-income households, Wahiawā Middle School represents a vital part of the local community and a key focus for educational equity initiatives.

The workshop, titled “Programming a Finch Robot,” introduced students to Java programming through an interactive robotics challenge. Participants used Java code to control the Finch robot’s sensors—including light, proximity, and temperature—to navigate a series of mazes. For many students, this was their first experience with computer programming, making the day both educational and empowering.

Pacxa’s team of developers provided hands-on mentorship throughout the event, helping students turn code into real-world action. Among the volunteers was Elayne Man, a technical architect at Pacxa and an alumna of Mililani High School. Reflecting on her own experience with Oracle Academy, she shared:

“This was a great way to give back to my community. I remember how impactful it was learning to code in high school, and seeing these students light up as their robots completed the challenge was incredibly rewarding. My hope is that they leave feeling inspired to explore a future in IT.”

The impact was clear: with up to 92% of attendees identifying as female students, every participant expressed interest in pursuing further IT opportunities at Leilehua High School next school year. This positive response underscores the importance of early, inclusive access to technology education.

Looking ahead to Fall 2025, Pacxa plans to host additional Oracle Academy workshops designed to encourage students to apply technology in solving real-world problems within their communities.

Oracle Academy is honored to support our members like Pacxa in expanding access to computing education and preparing students in Hawaiʻiand around the worldfor success in the digital economy. Together, we are building a pipeline of future innovators equipped with the skills, confidence, and curiosity to thrive.
