The Ministry of Labour and Employment has increased the monthly wage ceiling for provident fund coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, effective 17 September 2026.
The change was notified through S.O. 5109(E), dated 17 September 2026, and published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3(ii). It follows the Union Cabinet’s approval on 16 September 2026 and represents the first revision to the wage ceiling since 1 September 2014.
The revised threshold is expected to bring more employees within the scope of mandatory provident fund coverage and increase the contribution base for eligible employees. Employers should review payroll configurations, employee eligibility, and statutory contribution calculations to ensure compliance from the effective date.
