Today we are announcing Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2, a new generation of our unified storage platform based on the innovative ZFS file system and its hybrid storage pool model. Leveraging a massively scaled SMP-based OS with multi-petabyte scalability, extensive DRAM and flash caches on top of the latest AMD® EPYC®-based hardware, Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 is a powerhouse capable of handling even the most demanding workloads, up to 2X faster than the previous model. For customers with workloads requiring high IOPS as well as high throughput, Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 is available with either capacity drive trays using new 26TB hard drives and DDS acceleration, or with all-flash trays using 7.68TB SSDs. This makes Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 a most powerful yet cost-effective storage system.

Built to work with other Oracle Engineered Systems, Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 brings a big jump in Oracle Database RMAN backup performance, achieving 120 TB/hour in backups and 123 TB/hour in restores. This represents the throughput at the network level, and when compression at the database level is taken into account, the logical throughput can be much greater. The end result is faster backups and smaller backup windows.

This performance extends to other Oracle database use cases, such as AI vector searches running on an Oracle Exadata Database Machine with Oracle Database 23ai.  By using the OCI-compatible object storage on the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance to hold large binary objects such as videos and images that can be accessed with Oracle Database 23ai, you get the performance of Oracle Engineered Systems and the economy of Oracle ZFS Storage.

The versatility of Oracle ZFS Storage appliance makes it an excellent NAS system as well as an outstanding backup platform for Oracle systems running multiple application types. For those reasons, Oracle ZFS Storage technology is an integral part of Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance.

Oracle ZFS Storage features are also available in Oracle ZFS Storage High Availability (ZFS-HA), the virtualized ZFS Storage Appliance in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Its performance, cost-effectiveness, and multi-protocol file sharing has made it an essential part of many OCI deployments. Fully compatible with the ZFS Storage Appliance, its ability to use ZFS replication has simplified the process of migrating workloads or setting up OCI-based DR sites for on-premises Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance customers. For more on ZFS-HA, see the listing in OCI Marketplace.

Combining the advanced architecture of Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 with simplified storage management, deep analytics, storage efficiency, and a competitive price point, it’s a system that’s hard to beat for Oracle Database and general application storage, file sharing, support of large-scale virtualized environments, and backup and recovery.

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 brings a new way of customizing the appliance to handle your workload. The raw power of the AMD® EPYC® processor has allowed Oracle’s engineering team to consolidate mid-range or high-end configurations onto a single hardware chassis, which can be tailored with DRAM, network, and SAS capabilities to meet the performance needs of any workload.

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 requires software version OS8.8.81 (2013.1.8.81), with the latest technical advancements from Oracle ZFS Storage engineering.  This version is also available for download for previous Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance platforms and for the Oracle ZFS Storage High-Availability in OCI – see Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance: Software Updates (Doc ID 2021771.1) available on My Oracle Support for more details.
