In addition to Database Management’s comprehensive database performance diagnostics and management capabilities for Oracle Databases, Database Management now supports the monitoring of components that comprise Oracle Database systems! Database administrators can use Database Management to discover Oracle database systems located on premises (External Database Systems) and monitor the entire ecosystem. These capabilities greatly reduce the effort required to discover the components separately.
Use Database Management to discover the following components as a single resource using the Oracle database system resource-type:
- Clusters
- Databases
- ASM
- Listeners
Database Management provides a single-pane-of-glass view of the components and helps identify availability and performance issues before they impact the database.

External Database System discovery process
Database Management provides a simple process to discover the components in the External Database System as a single unit and add connections to monitor them. Here are the main tasks that must be performed during the discovery process:
- Select a Management Agent installed on one of the nodes of the external database to discover the associated components as part of one external database system.
- Select the components that you want to register and add connections to monitor and manage them using Database Management.
- Review the selected components and create the External Database System with the components.
Key features of External Database System
Once the External Database System is discovered, you can monitor the availability of the components at a glance on the Database system details page. From here, navigate to other pages to view detailed information about the components.
Monitor Clusters
Database Management enables the monitoring of clusters in either a RAC or RAC One Node External Database System. Monitor the External cluster details page to view:
- Availability of the cluster nodes
- Cluster configuration details such as Grid Infrastructure home
- Node metrics such as CPU, memory, and process
- Cluster interconnect transfer rates
- SCAN configuration of the cluster

Monitor ASM
Storage management in OCI Database Management is improved with the Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) monitoring capability. This view provides detailed insights to optimize storage performance, monitor utilization, and ensure high availability.
Monitoring of ASM is supported through credential-based monitoring. For simplicity, use the default asmsnmp user for the ASM monitoring credentials or any user with both the SYSASM and SYSDBA roles.
External ASM details page helps monitor:
- Status of the ASM instances
- Capacity and space usage of ASM disks and disk groups
- Databases serviced by the ASM instances
- I/O activity in disk groups and databases
- ASM configuration and user information

Monitor Database and ASM Listeners
Using Database Management enables real-time information on applications to successfully connect to the database. The Listener details page monitors:
- Availability and status of the listener
- Number of active, established, and refused connections per minute
- Details of the database or ASM serviced by the listener

Monitor components availability and performance using OCI Monitoring Service
In addition to monitoring the External Database System components in Database Management, the metrics and alarms features s in the OCI Monitoring service can be used to monitor the availability and performance of the components.
Get started today!
Database Management simplifies the process of discovering and monitoring External Database System components. Try out this feature set the next time you use Database Management. Find Database Management under the Observability and Management menu in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console. The service is accessible through the Console, CLI, and REST API and is already available in all commercial regions, with Government regions coming soon.
