Meeting aggressive recovery objectives has always been a defining characteristic of Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA). With Oracle AI Database 26ai, Oracle has significantly accelerated Data Guard and Active Data Guard role transitions, enabling dramatically faster switchovers and failovers on Exadata and Exadata Database Service.

MAA validation testing demonstrated up to 5x faster failovers and more than 3x faster switchovers, with failovers consistently completing in less than 30 seconds across both small and large workload configurations. These enhancements directly improve Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and strengthen the operational foundation required for the Oracle MAA Platinum tier.

Oracle Exadata Database Service with Active Data Guard on Oracle AI Database 26ai is now aligned with the Oracle MAA Platinum tier guidance (as seen in the Multicloud MAA Certification Matrix) across Oracle Database@Azure, Oracle Database@Google Cloud, and Oracle Database@AWS, extending Oracle’s mission-critical MAA architecture consistently across all three Oracle multicloud partners.

Advancing to the MAA Platinum tier with Active Data Guard

Oracle MAA defines the Platinum MAA tier as the mission-critical availability tier designed to achieve:

  • Local HA RTO is less than 10 seconds
  • Regional DR RTO less than 30 seconds
  • Zero or near-zero RPO

As I indicated in my blog post regarding the Next-Gen MAA tiers, the Platinum MAA tier builds upon the Gold MAA tier by combining Exadata with Active Data Guard running Oracle AI Database 26ai. For organizations running mission-critical workloads, this architecture provides a validated path to achieving more aggressive availability objectives while leveraging Oracle best practices for high availability, disaster recovery, and operational resilience.

For existing Exadata and Exadata Database Service customers already utilizing Data Guard and Active Data Guard, Oracle AI Database 26ai provides a compelling opportunity to further reduce recovery times and advance toward Platinum MAA tier objectives.

Faster Role Transitions with Oracle AI Database 26ai

Oracle AI Database 26ai introduces significant optimizations throughout the Data Guard role transition process, including enhancements to database recovery, checkpoint processing, service management, and multitenant database operations.

The result is dramatically faster switchover and failover performance:

  • Up to 5.3x faster failovers
  • Up to 3.4x faster switchovers
  • Failovers completed in less than 30 seconds
  • Consistent improvements across both small and large workload configurations
  • No application changes required

These improvements help organizations reduce downtime during planned maintenance activities, disaster recovery testing, and unplanned outage scenarios. Faster role transitions also simplify operational procedures by allowing organizations to perform switchovers more frequently while minimizing application disruption.

For many organizations, achieving Platinum MAA tier level recovery objectives has traditionally required careful architectural planning and operational discipline. Oracle AI Database 26ai helps make those objectives more attainable by significantly reducing the time required to transition database roles during both planned and unplanned events.

A Consistent Extremely Resilient MAA Platinum Tier Architecture Across Oracle Multicloud

One of the most significant aspects of this announcement is the consistency it brings across Oracle’s multicloud offerings.

Customers deploying the Oracle Exadata Database Service on:

  • Oracle Database@Azure
  • Oracle Database@AWS
  • Oracle Database@Google Cloud

can leverage the same Oracle MAA Platinum architecture, the same Active Data Guard best practices, and the same operational model across all three hyperscaler environments.

This enables organizations to standardize on a common high availability and disaster recovery architecture while taking advantage of the flexibility to select their preferred cloud provider. Regardless of deployment location, customers can utilize Active Data Guard on Oracle Exadata Database Service on Dedicated Infrastructure running Oracle AI Database 26ai to achieve the availability objectives associated with the MAA Platinum tier.

The result is a consistent approach to mission-critical database protection across Oracle’s multicloud ecosystem, allowing organizations to align resiliency strategies, operational procedures, and recovery objectives across Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud deployments.

Delivering Mission-Critical Availability

Oracle AI Database 26ai represents one of the most significant advancements in Data Guard recovery performance in recent years. By combining Exadata, Active Data Guard, and Oracle AI Database 26ai, organizations can reduce recovery times, improve operational resiliency, and align with Oracle’s MAA Platinum architecture.

For existing Exadata and Exadata Database Service customers, the transition to Oracle AI Database 26ai provides a straightforward opportunity to take advantage of faster role transitions and enhanced Active Data Guard capabilities while advancing toward more resilient RTO and RPO objectives.

As organizations continue adopting Oracle Database@Azure, Oracle Database@AWS, and Oracle Database@Google Cloud, Oracle MAA provides a consistent framework for designing, deploying, and operating mission-critical database environments across Oracle’s multicloud ecosystem.
