Continuing to enhance the Leapp utility for in-place Oracle Linux upgrades, you can now upgrade Oracle Autonomous Linux 7 instances to Oracle Autonomous Linux 8 in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
Autonomous Linux, based on Oracle Linux, removes complexity and human error, helping to lower costs while increasing security and availability. Autonomous Linux provides Red Hat Enterprise Linux application compatibility.
The Leapp utility is a framework for updating and upgrading operating systems. It can be especially beneficial for Oracle Linux systems running Oracle Database 19c without the need to reinstall the database after the upgrade. Refer to this table for more information about using Leapp for upgrading Oracle Linux 7 OCI instances.
Two Stage Upgrade Process
There are two stages of a system upgrade with Leapp: the assessment (or preupgrade) phase and the upgrade phase. The preupgrade phase checks the system to generate a report of any issues that might impede the upgrade and provides recommendations for resolving those issues. The preupgrade can be executed as many times as desired. Once the preupgrade phase has been satisfied, the upgrade phase can be executed. After the completion of an instance upgrade, some verification steps and postupgrade tasks need to be completed before returning the instance to production.
When performing an upgrade using Leapp, it is highly recommended that you back up the system so that it can be restored to its former state if the upgrade fails. For Oracle Linux instances in OCI, we recommend performing a boot volume backup. Oracle Database systems should be fully backed up before attempting the Leapp upgrade.
