As you may know, we announced the release of our latest version of Oracle Integration, Oracle Integration 3, in August 2022.

About Oracle Integration 3

Built on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure with developers and end users in mind, Oracle Integration 3 provides an optimized user experience, redesigned user interface, and improved scalability and performance. Additionally, new features will supercharge your workday, whether you work in design time, runtime, or monitoring. New adapters and new features in existing adapters streamline your connectivity. See a complete list in What’s New for Oracle Integration 3.

Upgrades are beginning soon

Shortly after Oracle Integration 3 became generally available, we began upgrading internal instances to Oracle Integration 3. In addition, many customers have provisioned new Oracle Integration 3 instances side by side with existing Oracle Integration Generation 2 instances. Furthermore, new promotional and paid customers have worked extensively in Oracle Integration 3. The success of this rapid adoption has accelerated our efforts to upgrade all Oracle Integration Generation 2 instances.

If you haven’t yet, you’ll receive a notification about your upcoming Oracle Integration Generation 2 to Oracle Integration 3 upgrade in the coming weeks or months.

An optimized upgrade experience

We learned many lessons during the upgrades to Oracle Integration Generation 2 and applied them to the current upgrade process. Most notably, the upgrade’s end-to-end duration is cut by a factor of eight. For the hundreds of instances we have upgraded already, the average downtime has been less than 10 minutes. Additionally, upgrade windows are available during weekends and weekdays to accommodate your business requirements.

Capabilities determine upgrade timing

For this upgrade, we are taking a phased approach based on the capabilities you use. For example, if your instance uses integrations only, you can schedule your upgrade first. Next up are instances that use Oracle Visual Builder, following by instances that use publish and subscribe integration patterns, and so on.

Our precheck algorithm determines the features that each instance uses and helps us determine upgrade eligibility. Furthermore, we look at all instances in a tenancy to determine if they are all ready for upgrade in each upgrade phase. Your instance is ready if all the instances in your tenancy clear eligibility prechecks. This check prevents unnecessary delays between the upgrades of your environments.

If all the capabilities that you use are ready for upgrade and you haven’t been contacted about scheduling your upgrade, review the Upgrade Prerequisites and complete any incomplete tasks.

Upgrading is mandatory

Upgrade is mandatory maintenance, and you are required to upgrade your instance(s) to Oracle Integration 3. However, the task is a fully managed operation that Oracle completes for you, with no additional cost for you.

After your instance is ready for upgrade, your tasks are simple and straightforward: simply schedule and prepare for the upgrade, and complete post-upgrade tasks after it’s finished.

Prepare for the upgrade

Oracle schedules your upgrade after all prerequisites have been met. You receive one email notification per instance, informing you that your upgrade has been scheduled. At the same time, an Upgrade page appears in your instance in the menu. On this page, you can select a different upgrade window, if needed, up to three days before the upgrade. Three days before the upgrade, your upgrade window is locked and cannot be changed. We recommend you schedule your Development, Test, and Production environments at least two weeks apart so you have time for testing activities. However, you must stay within the dates available to you.

Next, prepare for the upgrade by updating your allowlists, if needed, and completing pre-upgrade tasks. See Update Allowlists and Complete Pre-Upgrade Tasks for a checklist. Make sure that all Oracle Integration users and stakeholders in your company are expecting this upgrade. Add people’s email addresses to the upgrade notification list on the new Upgrade page.

In the days leading up to the upgrade, limit your development work to remain upgrade eligible. See Limit Development Work Before the Upgrade for more information.

On the day of the upgrade

On the day of the upgrade, sit back and wait for the upgrade to complete and the confirmation email to arrive. You can begin the post-upgrade tasks, including testing, immediately after the upgrade completes.
