Oracle Database 19c is now available on the Oracle Exadata in addition to LiveSQL.oracle.com. Database 19c is the final release of the Oracle Database 12c family of products and has been nominated as the extended support release (in the old version name scheme, 19c is equivalent to 188.8.131.52). Though we encourage our Exadata customers to upgrade to the latest version of the Oracle Database to benefit from all our continuous innovation, we do understand that customers may take up new versions more slowly. Release 19c comes with 4 years of premium support and an additional 3 years of extended support. As always, curious readers can refer to MOS Note 742060.1 for details on the support schedule.
Dom Giles’s blog discusses Database 19c in detail. This post focuses on the unique benefits of Database 19c on Exadata, the best platform for running the Oracle Database. Before that, it’s useful to quickly go over some highlights of Exadata System Software 19.1, which is required to upgrade to Oracle Database 19c.
Exadata System Software 19.1, generally available last year, was one of the most ground-breaking Exadata software release to date (see post and webcast), and is required to run Database 19c on Exadata. Upgrading to Exadata 19.1 will also upgrade the operating system to Oracle Linux 7 Update 5 in a rolling fashion, without requiring any downtime.
The most popular innovation of Exadata 19.1 was Automated Performance Monitoring, which combines machine learning techniques with the deep lessons learned from thousands of mission critical real-world deployments to automatically detect infrastructure anomalies and alert software or persons so they can take corrective actions.
For many years optimizing the performance of the Oracle database required bespoke tuning by performance experts with the help of the Oracle optimizer. Database 19c introduces Automatic Indexing, an expert system that emulates a performance expert. This expert system continually analyzes executing SQL and determines which existing indexes are useful and which are not. Automatic Indexing continually learns and keep tuning the database as the underlying data model or usage path changes.
Some of the most critical database systems in the world run on Exadata. Tuning these critical systems requires capturing most current statistics. But capturing statistics is a resource intensive task that impinges on the operation of these critical systems. Database 19c solves this dilemma by introducing Real Time Statistics. Now they can be collected as DML operations insert, update or delete the data in real time.
The future of analytics is In-Memory, and Exadata is the ideal platform for In-Memory processing. Exadata’s unique capability to execute vector instructions against in-memory columnar formatted data in flash makes it possible to use In-Memory technology for all your data sets and not just the most critical ones. Every database and Exadata software release continues to extend the capabilities of In-Memory technology on Exadata.
Database 19c unlocks another unique capability for In-Memory, Memoptimized Rowstore - Fast Ingest. Some modern applications, such as Internet of Things (IoT) applications, need to process high frequency data streams. These data streams are generated by a potentially large number of data sources (e.g., devices, sensors). The Memoptimized Rowstore - Fast Ingest feature enables fast data inserts into an Oracle database. These “deferred inserts” are buffered and written to disk asynchronously by background processes. This enables the Oracle database to easily keep up with the high-frequency, single-row data inserts characteristic of modern data streaming applications.
Enabled by unique-to-Exadata functionality, Oracle Database 19c delivers substantial performance and ease-of-management improvements for all workloads. Machine learning complements lessons from real-world deployments to monitor performance and provide safe and efficient optimizations. In-memory enhancements enable the best analytics functionality, and support for deferred inserts enable fast on-line operations.
