Welcome to KubeCon North America at the scenic Salt Lake City! As we celebrate Kubernetes’ 10th anniversary, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible cloud native community, a great force for innovation!

At Oracle, we embrace open source and cloud native technologies to drive innovation within our company and for our customers. We’re proud to be part of the open source community through our substantial contributions to the Linux Kernel, Java, and numerous other projects. We designed Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with openness at its core, building on technologies like Kubernetes. This commitment to openness extends to making our own technologies, including Oracle Database and HeatWave, available on other cloud service providers.

At this KubeCon, we’re excited to announce new open-source and Oracle capabilities designed to empower developers. These enhancements will enable faster application development, provide flexible data management options, and support deployment and scaling on developers’ own terms.

Boost Developer Velocity

The sheer number and pace at which developers are building intelligent applications is increasing with AI-powered tools available at their disposal. Developers can easily build AI-enhanced applications with OCI Generative AI Service that supports a choice of large language models (LLMs), from open source models like Llama to partner models like Cohere Command R and R+. They also have the flexibility to use in-database LLMs in HeatWave GenAI or vector search in Oracle Database 23ai on OCI to infuse their applications with AI.

To enable developers to build applications faster, we introduced Oracle Code Assist, an AI code companion available in Beta.  Oracle Code Assist, a plug-in for popular IDEs, will work for most modern programming languages and is specifically optimized for Java, followed by SuiteScript, PL/SQL, and application development on OCI.

In the spirit of openness and enabling developers, we offer partner solutions such as digitalML’s API Catalog and Consumer Portal for Oracle Integration. This new joint offering is an example of how partners build with Oracle services to expand their offerings for developers.

Choice of Databases

Developers have a choice of open source and Oracle databases on OCI for their applications. We’re excited to announce several enhancements to open source and Oracle databases.

One such enhancement is to OCI Search with OpenSearch v2.15. This release will introduce advanced AI and ML features, including real-time anomaly detection, predictive analytics, and pretrained model integration, significantly boosting search performance, observability, and security.

OCI Database with PostgreSQL is coming soon with version 16, including new capabilities and improved performance.  We will also introduce cross-region replication for seamless disaster recovery and reduced latency for global applications, ensuring data is protected and accessible wherever needed.

We are pleased to announce that Oracle will soon support Valkey, an open source in-memory data source, into the OCI Cache service. Earlier this year, Oracle and the open source community joined forces to support Valkey and to continue development based on Redis 7.2.4, ensuring the project remains available for use and distribution under the open source Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) 3-clause license.

We are also making our own products more accessible for developers to innovate. Oracle Database 23ai Free is available to developers. Now, they can use it on MacBooks too. Oracle Database 23ai Free container images for Arm-based Apple MacBook computers offers Mac-based developers the ability to experience Oracle’s mission-critical database and its latest AI-centric capabilities at no cost.

To really heat things up, developers can also try HeatWave for free. Available in the OCI Always Free Service, HeatWave enables developers to build and run small-scale applications using HeatWave MySQL, analytics, machine learning, JavaScript, HeatWave Vector Store, and process data in object store. All OCI accounts get access to a standalone HeatWave instance on OCI in the home region, along with 50 GB of storage and 50 GB of backup storage, for an unlimited time. They also receive $300 of credit to use for all eligible OCI services for up to 30 days.

In the spirit of openness, we make Oracle Database available in other cloud providers. Developers can deploy where they wish with Oracle Database@Azure, Oracle Database@Google Cloud, and the newly announced Oracle Database@AWS. Continuing the multicloud theme, HeatWave is available in AWS, Azure, and, of course, OCI.

Deploy and Scale

Finally, developers need access to the best infrastructure and toolset to deploy and scale applications while meeting business needs in various sectors, including regulated industries. At Oracle, we are keenly aware of the needs of enterprises, and we enable developers to build and deploy apps on various types of infrastructure, in different locations, and across multicloud environments. We have several enhancements for developers to build and deploy applications on OCI.

We recently announced the general availability of OCI Compute bare metal instances with AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs, which enable developers a choice of GPUs for AI training, fine tuning, and inferencing.

In September 2024, we also announced the first Zettascale Cloud Computing Cluster to train generative AI models on OCI. Zettascale clusters can deliver up to 131,072 GPUs.

We are also excited about several updates to OCI Kubernetes Engine (OKE).  We are introducing a GPU Device Plugin add-on that allows users to customize the plugin setup to directly control GPU configurations. OKE now supports Ubuntu in addition to other OS options. And, OpenID Connect (OIDC), an open standard for authentication and discovery, is now available with OKE to provide a secure and flexible way to authenticate and authorize users.

As a commitment to CNCF and the community, we announced last year a $3 million per year commitment for 3 years for CNCF projects. We are pleased to see that numerous projects, including Kubernetes, Crossplane, KCP, and others, are actively utilizing Arm credits on OCI.
