The Evolution of Edge Cloud, Redefined

Businesses today demand the best of both worlds: the innovation of the public cloud and the security, compliance and low latency performance of on-premises infrastructure. That’s why we built Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer and Oracle Private Cloud Appliance—so you don’t have to compromise. Now, with the next generation X11 platforms, featuring faster state-of-the-art hardware components, we’re taking this vision even further.

Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer X11: Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer X11 is a fully managed edge cloud solution that delivers Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services including compute, storage, networking, and OCI Kubernetes Engine (OKE) in your data centers. It can be run connected to public cloud or disconnected (air-gapped) with on-site managed options and offers a flexible OpEx pricing model.

Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X11: Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X11 is a customer-managed, rack-scale engineered system that brings OCI- compute, storage, networking, and OKE on-premises. Designed for environments disconnected from the public cloud, it enables rapid deployment of cloud-compatible applications, middleware, and workloads using built-in automation in an OCI-like environment. The system follows a CapEx pricing model, giving organizations full control over their infrastructure while maintaining OCI compatibility.

What’s new in Oracle Compute Cloud@Customer & Oracle Private Cloud Appliance X11?

This latest release is our most advanced yet, featuring:

  • Next-Gen Processors: The Compute E6 shapes in the X11 platform are powered by the latest 5th Generation AMD EPYC™ Processors, these systems deliver significantly faster compute performance and lower latency for your most demanding workloads. Each processor features 96 processor cores and supports DDR5-6400 memory, enabling exceptional speed and efficiency.
  • Compute performance Improvements: OCI Compute E6 shapes deliver over 50% better cost-to-performance compared to the previous E5 instance generation, based on OCI’s internal benchmarking. According to Compute Cloud@Customer internal benchmarking, the new VM.PCAStandard.E6.Flex shapes offer up to 64% higher SPEC IntRate (for integer workloads) and up to 67% higher SPEC FPRate (for floating-point workloads) compared to the previous E5 Flex shapes. This makes them a more efficient and cost-effective choice for a wide range of applications.

This means you get significantly more workload performance for each dollar spent per core.

  • Max Boost frequency: Achieves up to 4.5 GHz, a 21% increase over the previous generation, delivering faster processing speeds.
  • “Zen 5” architecture: Provides higher instructions per cycle (IPC), especially benefiting integer-heavy workloads.
  • Faster memory: E6 Compute nodes utilize DDR5-6400 memory, offering up to 33% higher bandwidth than previous DDR5-4800 modules. They also support more PCIe® Gen5 lanes for increased I/O throughput and feature up to 5x the L3 cache per core, enabling faster data access and improved overall performance for data-intensive applications.

Storage Performance Improvement: There’s an 18% improvement in raw IOPS and an over 200% improvement in available I/O Bandwidth in the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS11-2 compared to the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS9-2 mid-range appliance used in the X10 platform.

  • Four Corner Workloads: X11 (ZS 11-2) vs. X10 (ZS 9-2) Performance
    • Maximum Throughput: The X11 (ZS11-2) system reaches approximately 3 GB/s, while the X10 (ZS9-2) hovers around 2.2 GB/s, representing a 36% throughput boost with X11.
    • Random Reads: X11 (ZS11-2) achieves between 80,000 and 85,000 IOPS, compared to X10’s (ZS9-2’s) 70,000 to 73,000 IOPS-an improvement of about 16%.
    • Random Writes: X11 (ZS11-2) delivers 70,000 to 76,000 IOPS versus X10’s (ZS9-2’s) 55,000 to 60,000 IOPS, which amounts to a 27% growth in write performance.

  • Random Mixed Read/Write Workloads:
    • The most impressive gains were recorded in write-intensive workloads, with increases up to 90% for larger block sizes (such as 1M).
    • For mixed read/write operations using 4K block sizes, X11 exhibits an extraordinary performance leap of approximately 236%.
    • Read performance also improves, especially for larger block sizes, where the gain is around 40%-though this is slightly less pronounced than the gains seen with writes.
