We are proud to announce that Oracle and Oracle Cloud Marketplace Partners can publish compatible solutions for Oracle’s family of Tactical Edge devices – Oracle Roving Edge Infrastructure – for customers in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Roving Edge Infrastructure compatible solutions, allows Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (Oracle Cloud) users the opportunity to seamlessly move compatible solutions to their Roving Edge Infrastructure devices from the Oracle Cloud Marketplace prior to receiving their devices. This means customers can rapidly deploy to the field—instead of configuring edge equipment in remote geographical areas, where network connectivity is often limited or non-existent.

“Developers want to build their agile apps in the cloud, however, many apps are destined to be run at the edge.  Often what happened in the past was an awkward edge self-install and then a hope that the app was compatible and performed well”, said Mark Tatum VP of Cloud and Mission Technology, Oracle National Security Group. “Oracle’s approach to the cloud edge includes the ability to pre-build your applications in the cloud and use of marketplace solutions as a part of your build.  An edge workload built in the Oracle Cloud runs on Roving Edge Infrastructure, so compatibility isn’t an issue.  Before the edge device leaves Oracle, it is pre-loaded with your apps and compatible Marketplace solutions eliminating the need to install and configure a cloud edge device yourself after shipment.   This is critical for getting solutions to warfighters quickly.  Even after deployment, app updates can be synced to the edge if communications are available.”

Oracle Cloud Marketplace solutions compatible with Roving Edge Infrastructure includes internal Oracle software platforms like Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, Oracle GoldenGate, Oracle Analytic Server (OAS), Oracle Stream Analytics, Oracle MySQL and Oracle NoSQL, in addition to third-party Independent Software Vendor (ISV) products to have a complete strategy for Roving Edge Infrastructure customer value and adoption. The addition of this Oracle Cloud Marketplace feature means that Oracle Cloud customers no longer need to contact Oracle Marketplace vendors separately to confirm capability or obtain compatible images to transfer software to the Oracle Roving Edge Infrastructure or rearchitect solutions, which uses valuable engineering resources, making them available within a few clicks using Oracle Cloud tenancy synchronization. Additionally, Oracle has also taken steps to provide STIG Oracle Linux for US government users to ensure United States DoD compliance is quick and painless for mission critical applications.

“We designed and built Roving Edge Infrastructure and the edge devices with the capability to bring a much higher level of compute, storage and networking power to the tactical edge than ever before.” said Mark Mills, Architect for the Oracle Roving Edge Infrastructure.  “By enabling ML, AI and computationally intensive data driven cloud workloads to operate in the field, regardless of how rugged the environment is, we believe we have delivered a substantial advantage to the warfighters that provide our national security, and we look forward to seeing them deployed into the field.”

Oracle Roving Edge Infrastructure accelerates deployment of cloud workloads outside the data center. Oracle Roving Edge Devices (REDs) deliver cloud computing and storage services at the edge of networks and in disconnected locations, allowing faster processing close to the data origination source, which enables insights into the data in near real time. Each Oracle RED is equipped with high performance hardware giving the user operational resources of: 32 OCPUs (64 virtual CPUs), 384 GB of onboard DRAM, 40 TB of NVMe SSD storage per node, and high-speed networking. Each node includes an NVIDIA Tesla T4 GPU to support advanced processing such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in a ruggedized shock mount electromagnetic shielded enclosure that and can cluster from 5-15 nodes.

Existing Oracle Cloud workloads and object storage can be preloaded and synchronized to the Oracle Roving Edge Devices using the same cloud console and tenancy tooling as Oracle Cloud regions, which means edge application deployments are quicker and easier than ever before.
