Improving the User Experience for the Oracle IaaS and PaaS Console

Amy Kemp
Principal Product Manager

As a product manager who's focused on improving the user experience for Oracle IaaS and PaaS customers, I love getting feedback about how we can make your jobs easier. Even better, I love being a part of the team that helps to bring that feedback to life in the form of enhancements to our console.

We originally unveiled our new console homepage on October 2018, when we updated our look and feel, and made it easier for you to find the information that you need. Today, we're excited to build on that momentum by introducing key console enhancements that will further improve how you leverage, manage, and get support for your IaaS and PaaS services.

Enhanced Service Announcements

We've enhanced how we deliver service-related announcements directly in the console. All users with the right set of permissions, and not just the tenant administrator, can stay up-to-date on relevant service updates or planned changes.

Announcements for the most high-impact events appear as banners at the top of the console. You can click them for details or dismiss them when you're already up to speed.

Additionally, you can view all announcements by clicking on the announcement icon (it looks like a bell) on the top bar of the console. You can filter by the type of announcement, and if you're searching for a specific announcement made during a certain time period, you can filter by date range.

Improved Support Experience for Service Limit Increases

We've simplified the ability for you to see when you're about to reach your service limits, and we've added the ability to request increases within the console. Just enter your contact information, the service category (for example, Compute), and the resource for which you want to request an increase. For most requests, we offer a one-day response window.

Relevant and Contextual Help

We've enhanced our help functionality by making it more relevant to the service that you're currently provisioning or managing. First, we analyzed the most common issues that our users need help with, by service. Then we curated short lists of the top help topics and focused on those in the help navigation window. For example, if you're provisioning compute, all help topics are relevant to compute. And when you move on to provisioning Autonomous Data Warehouse, all help topics focus on the most common guidelines for that service. Over time, we will add these links across all services so that you can quickly find what you need.

Improved Cost and Billing Management Capabilities

A new cost analysis dashboard makes it easier for administrators and controllers to stay on top of usage and costs. You can easily see your latest usage charges at-a-glance. If you're a customer who's trying us out with our US$300 free trial, you can see how many trial credits you've used and the days left in your trial.

You can filter by specific date ranges, and filter by compartment and tags to analyze usage and costs by department and projects. Additionally, you can expand by service to analyze how much each service has been used over time. For example, if you tag resources used for different development projects, you can easily filter and track service usage by development team.

This is only the beginning. We'll be rolling out more user experience enhancements soon. As always, we want and appreciate your feedback, so keep it coming.

If you're new to the Oracle Cloud Platform, we invite you to see how easy it is to get started with Oracle Cloud services with our US$300 free trial.
