Deploy VMware HCX Connector in your on-premises VMware environment and establish a site pairing with Oracle Cloud VMware Solution

Niranjan Mohapatra
Principal Solution Architect

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution is a fully certified and supported solution that uses Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) to host a highly available and scalable VMware software-defined data center (SDDC). A standard VMware implementation, it works with existing operational practices.

Oracle introduced VMware HCX Advanced into Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. It helps customers to migrate their on-premises VMware workloads to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution and configure hybrid software-defined data center (SDDC) between on-premises VMware environment and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution Environment.

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution provides the URL to download the VMware HCX connector and provides the license key for the VMware HCX connector. You can download the HCX connector and deploy on your on-premises VMware environment. You don’t need to procure other license keys separately for the VMware HCX Advance, because Oracle provides them.

Before you start

Before you start deploying VMware HCX in the on-premises VMware environment, consider the following steps:

  • Create Oracle Cloud VMware Solution cluster on OCI with HCX.

  • Configure a dedicated private network using Oracle Cloud FastConnect between OCI and your on-premises data center.

  • Create and configure required network routing configurations on your virtual cloud network (VCN) for connecting Oracle Cloud VMware Solution environment to your on-premises environment.

  • Allow security ports by creating the security rules on your OCI VCN and on-premises data center network devices.

  • Allow on-premises VMware environment IP blocks in the VCN and allow the VCN IP block in the on-premises data center edge router for routing network traffic.

Deploy VMware HCX in your on-premises VMware environment

If you don’t have HCX deployed on your on-premises VMware environment, the following steps require downloading the HCX connector OVA from Oracle Cloud VMware Solution environment and deploying it on on-premises VMware environment.

Step 1: Download HCX connector OVA and Deploy on on-premises VMware environment

  1. Log in to the HCX Manager using the IP or FQDN given in the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution software-defined data center details page. Use the username administrator@vsphere.local and the temporary password for the HCX manager, given in the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution software-defined data center details page.

  2. Under the Administration section, click system updates. Then click Check Updates.

  3. Click Check for Updates and then click Request Download Link.

  4. Either click VMware HCX to download the HCX connector OVA and copy the downloaded OVA to your on-premises VMware environment, or click Copy Link to copy the OVA download URL and use the URL in your on-premises environment to download the HCX connector OVA file.

  5. Deploy the OVA to the on-premises vCenter Server. For details, refer to the VMware user guide documentation.

  6. After successful deployment in your on-premises VMware environment, power on the HCX connector.

  7. Copy the HCX connector activation key from the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution software-defined data center details page.

  8. Activate and configure HCX connector in you on-premises VMware environment. For details, refer to the VMware user guide documentation.

After successful completion of these steps, the HCX shows in the on-premises vCenter Server as shown in the following screenshot:

Step 2: Create a Compute profile in your on-premises HCX

  1. Log in to the on-premises HCX Connector using your vCenter SSO credential from the plugin, shown in the on-premises vCenter Server menu.

  2. Click Interconnect under the Infrastructure section.

  3. lick Compute Profile and then Create Compute Profile. For details, refer to the VMware user guide documentation.

Step 3: Establish a site pairing between your on-premises HCX and Oracle Cloud VMware Solution HCX

  1. Click Site Pairing under the Infrastructure section. You must complete this step from the on-premises HCX Connector. You can’t configure a site pairing from the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution target site.

  2. Enter the private IP address of the HXC Manager configured in Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, which is found on the SDDC Details page.

  3. Enter the username administrator@vsphere.local and the SSO password to pair.

Step 4: Create a service mesh in your on-premises HCX

  1. Log in to your on-premises HCX using vSphere SSO credential.

  2. Click Interconnect under the Infrastructure section.

  3. Choose Service Mesh.

  4. Click Create Service Mesh.

  5. Choose the on-premises site as the source and the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC as the destination.

  6. Choose the on-premises Compute profile as the source Compute profile and the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution SDDC Compute profile as the remote Compute profile.

  7. To accept all services to be enabled, click Continue, or click individual services to disable them.

  8. To use the Uplink Network profiles previously configured, click Continue.

  9. To deploy the optional network extension appliances, click Continue.

  10. If necessary, configure bandwidth limits for WAN optimization.

  11. Name the service mesh.

  12. To deploy any needed appliances and configure the service mesh, review the service mesh configuration and click Finish.

Conclusion

Oracle provides VMware HCX as part of the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. This service allows you to download the HCX connector and deploy on your on-premises environment without extra cost. You can use HCX to migrate your on-premises VMware workload to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution or configure hybrid software-defined data center (SDDC) between Oracle Cloud VMware Solution and your on-premises VMware environment.
