Announcing a Certified VMware Solution on Oracle Cloud

Oracle and VMware each provide some of the most widely deployed software stacks in enterprise technology. For some time, VMware has provided solutions for improved efficiency and manageability that most every organization in the world deploys to run their business. VMware was a pioneer in defining a virtualized data center, allowing organizations to consolidate their infrastructure and make it more flexible, nimble, and easily managed—a huge improvement from the physical server implementations that came before. Oracle has also been a pioneer, helping organizations manage their most critical data with high-performance, reliable, and secure database and application software, and more recently, cloud services to deploy critical solutions of all types.

Announcing Oracle Cloud VMware Solution

At OpenWorld 2019, the two companies announced a groundbreaking partnership, Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, that will accelerate the pace of digital transformation for organizations around the world. For the first time, customers can now build VMware virtual server environments natively on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. They can do so with full operational equivalence to their on-premises VMware environments, using VMware management tools to manage resources in their own data centers and in Oracle Cloud.

When we set out to build Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, we wanted to give customers the best possible performance and the most consistent controls possible. We wanted to make deployments of VMware on Oracle Cloud perform as well or better than on-premises deployments, and to make them fully compatible with the management tools and processes that customers are already using. To this end, our leadership in bare metal cloud systems provides a foundation to run VMware without contention with server agents and hypervisors running on the cloud infrastructure. We're working closely with VMware to enable native VMware Cloud Foundation on Oracle Cloud with the first-ever layer-two networking controls in a cloud-based VMware solution.

Full Control and Flexibility

This is not a managed service. Customers get full control to build and manage their cloud VMware environment exactly as it runs in their own data center. They can extend their on-premises software defined data center into the Oracle Cloud for easy migration and consistent operations on both sides of the cloud fence. Customers can choose the version of VMware and decide when to upgrade, or decide not to.

Although other hyperscale cloud providers offer VMware capabilities, none of them provide the level of deep control, performance, and easy portability across cloud and on-premises environments that our jointly engineered solution does. Users of Oracle Cloud VMware Solution get low-latency connectivity between their cloud VMware environment and the full roster of Oracle Cloud services including Autonomous Database, Exadata Cloud Service, and all the data management, high-performance computing, and core services that Oracle Cloud offers.

From a use case perspective, the unique ability for customers to simply extend their on-premises data centers into the cloud will enable graceful migrations of virtualized resources to Oracle’s enterprise cloud, as well as hybrid deployments that span on-premises and cloud environments with seamless management of both. We believe that no other major cloud vendor today gives customers this level of flexibility and control.

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution will include VMware vSphere, VMware NSX-T, VMware vSAN, and, optionally, VMware HCX. The software will be deployed on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure following the VMware standard of 3+ bare metal hosts using a VMware Validated Design (VVD) architecture and on VMware certified hardware. Customers can scale their usage up and down as needed and pay for usage on-demand or with prepurchased, discounted, Oracle Universal Cloud Credits.

Broad Availability and Support

The service will run in all of the Oracle Cloud commercial regions at launch, and will be extended to new regions as they come online. Oracle Cloud VMware Solution will be sold by Oracle and Oracle Partners, with access to VMware best practices and technical resources as needed. Support for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution will be provided by Oracle with escalation to VMware when required. The comprehensive service level agreements provided by Oracle Cloud that cover availability, performance, and manageability will include resources running Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, just as it does with any other workloads running on Oracle Cloud.

Along with the ability to run VMware on Oracle Cloud, the partnership will include expanded technical support for Oracle products running on VMware virtualized environments. This will improve the ability to run Oracle Database and applications in VMware environments, whether in our cloud, in other clouds, or in customer data centers. Oracle will support customers with active support contracts running supported versions of Oracle products in Oracle supported computing environments.

This is a big deal for joint customers of Oracle and VMware. We believe this solution will give them the best possible results for running VMware in cloud, especially for customers who run Oracle workloads in or adjacent to VMware environments.
