This guest blog was written in collaboration with Helen V Phan, Director of Marketing at Ampere Computing.

Oracle CloudWorld 2022 is back in-person this year from October 17–20 in Las Vegas. As always, at CloudWorld you can expect great keynotes, breakout sessions, demos, and a ton of opportunities for meetings and networking. You can also get comprehensive product education for technical end users across all major product areas. You can see the complete agenda in the session catalog.

Oracle and our partners at Ampere have been collaborating on technical innovations, and this blog provides a sneak peek at some of the content that will be shared at Oracle CloudWorld.

Demonstrations and expertise

First, visit the Ampere booth (# 270) in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) hub to meet with our technical experts and learn how Oracle Ampere A1 can help you deliver up to three-times better price-performance for cloud native workloads. Because of the energy efficiency of Ampere Altra processors, you’re also getting great performance and helping the environment.

We’re also showcasing some cool demos with OCI Ampere A1 compute, including the following exmaples:

  • Efficiently running object detection model YoloV5 inference

  • Real-time object detection

  • Natural language processing (NLP)

  • Web services

  • Video streaming

Oracle and Ampere sessions

We have several live sessions available every day during CloudWorld. I have the following recommendations:

  • Ampere Altra-based Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Instances [LIT4480]
    10/18/22 Tuesday, Oct 18, 4:00–4:20 p.m. PT
Speaker: Naren Nayak, senior director of application engineering at Ampere Computing

Ampere Altra cloud native processors have been in the news recently for their compelling performance and energy efficiency focus. OCI was the first cloud to deploy Ampere Altra-based Compute instances and has since provided fast, flexible, and affordable compute capacity for industry-leading price performance. We outline some of the benefits of combining the disruptive architecture of the Ampere Altra processors with the high-performance cloud architecture of OCI. We dive into the real-world value derived from the OCI A1 Compute Platform offerings, from performance and energy efficiency to price performance—metrics every cloud developer cares about.

  • Leverage the Best of Open-Source Software with Ampere Altra on OCI [LIT2281]
    Wednesday, Oct 19, 3:40–4:00 p.m. PT
Speaker: Dave Neary, director of developer relations at Ampere Computing

Ampere Computing works within the enterprise and open source software ecosystems to help define and further the adoption of Ampere A1 in OCI. They ensure that Ampere platforms “just work,” which is what the server and cloud industry requires from the software supply chain and software user experience. Enterprise software vendors with certification programs create a starting point for the industry to establish customer confidence of software running on specific platforms. Hear the whole story of how Ampere A1 just works and what Ampere is doing to ensure it.

  • Real-World Web Services Using Kubernetes on OCI Ampere A1 Compute [LIT2289]
    Thursday, Oct 20, 10:20–10:40 a.m. PT
Speaker: Jyothi Sreekumar, senior principal solutions architect at Ampere Computing

Explore how to build and deploy simulated web services, such as social network applications, using microservices on Oracle Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) with Ampere A1 instances. Containerized microservices are used to build distributed applications for web services that are fault-tolerant and can scale out more effectively than monolithic applications. Ampere Altra processors are the perfect choice for deploying cloud native applications like these because of the predictable and highly scalable nature of the architecture.

  • Dial in Maximum Value with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute [LRN3764]
    Thursday, Oct 20, 2:30–3:15 p.m. PT
    Speaker: Sanjay Pillai from Oracle

When it comes to compute, one size doesn’t fit all. Learn how OCI customers can use general and special-purpose hardware shapes from Intel, a.m.D, Ampere, and NVIDIA with flexible virtual machine (VM) options that match compute to any workload requirement. Hear about new releases from OCI that deliver the performance, scale, and security required for any mission-critical workload, and see demonstrations highlighting OCI’s uniquely flexible compute.

  • Radically Simplified Cloud Infrastructure for Everyone [SOL3759]
    Wednesday, Oct 19 3:45–4:30 p.m. PT
Speakers: Greg Pavlik, SVP at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Kevyan Mohajer, CEO of SoundHound, and Jeff Wittich, chief product officer at Ampere Computing

We’re going through a period of tremendous uncertainty on the heels of a global pandemic. Meeting the goals of your organization to enter new markets and become more agile are imperative. Learn how OCI services for compute, storage, and networking can help you get to market faster, reduce risk, and scale to meet demand. With product announcements, this keynote features speakers from Ampere, an Oracle partner, and SoundHound, which powers Mercedes-Benz, Mastercard, and other well-known brands.

  • Java First. Java Always [SOL4349]
    Tuesday, Oct 18 10:45–11:45 a.m. PT
Speaker: Sharat Chander from Oracle, Georges Saab, vice president of development, for the Java platform at Oracle, Chad Arimura from Oracle, and Naren Nayak, Sr. Director Application Engineering, Ampere Computing

Modern application development is unrecognizable without Java. For more than 25 years, Java has empowered developers to create the next generation of rich, scalable, and secure applications. In this keynote, learn how Oracle’s ongoing Java leadership and stewardship is creating a contemporary language and platform that helps developer productivity.

  • Oracle CloudWorld Hackathon: Developing an AI powered Chatbot using Arm-based Ampere A1 compute on OCI [HOL4761 and 4762]
    Time TBD

In this hackathon, we enable developers to set up a web server with chatbot functionality using OCI Ampere A1 instances and Ampere AI VMs from the OCI Marketplace. We present a step-by-step guide to set up an NGINX server along with one of the common NLP models (BERT or similar) using Ampere AI-accelerated TensorFlow and PyTorch frameworks.

Participants learn that deploying standard software stacks (Nginx for the web, TensorFlow for AI) on Ampere Altra servers is easier than ever and can be further simplified and accelerated using Ampere AI VMs from the OCI Marketplace. We provide a benchmarking script to demonstrate the performance and cost-performance advantages of using Ampere AI on OCI.

Participants can take the initial template, tinker with the code, and customize to their applications’ needs.
