This year has been one like no other. In March, we moved to virtual volunteering, something new for Oracle Volunteers and nonprofits and schools alike. Yet, through it all, our Oracle Volunteers stepped up to advance education, protect the environment, and strengthen communities during these challenging times.
Today, we’re celebrating the more than 36,000 Oracle Volunteers who gave close to 133,000 hours of their time and talent last fiscal year.
What has volunteering looked like in 2020?
In India, students have been learning to code, watching engaging educational content on the television, and accessing learning materials in their local language thanks to the efforts of Oracle Volunteers.
Throughout Latin America, students designed video games to solve pressing social issues alongside Oracle Volunteers during Oracle Education Foundation’s Games4Good classes.
In Brazil, hospital patients with cerebral palsy received warm and cozy cowls crocheted by Oracle Volunteers. Near Oracle HQ, breast cancer survivors are receiving comfortable and cost-effective crocheted prosthetics.
In the Middle East and Africa and Central and Eastern Europe, students and teachers have been navigating the transition to virtual learning with the support of Oracle Volunteers.
While we haven’t been able to gather together to clean our parks and beaches, Oracle Volunteers in Japan, California and the United Kingdom, have been heading out into their own neighborhoods to remove plastics and trash, helping to ensure that we protect our blue planet and all the life it sustains.
We’ve also seen lots of global Oracle Volunteering projects, including a project where students at risk of dropping out of school in Indonesia had the opportunity to practice their English with Oracle Volunteers in the United States and Europe and also learn about these countries’ cultures.
Day in and day out, Oracle Volunteers have demonstrated that #TogetherWeCan make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Here’s to our Oracle Volunteers this International Volunteer Day!
