Top 10 Things That IT Does in Tough Times

Love this blog from Ping Identity -- Top 10 Things That IT Does in Tough Times. I couldn't agree more about the uptake on open source. We've seen a significant increase in OpenSSO activity over the last two months and attribute this to organizations looking for open source identity alternatives during these tough times. Check out our month by month message activity in the OpenSSO Project below.

Federated SSO to SugarCRM using OpenSSO & simpleSAMLphp

The Sun Writers have been popping our tons of great technical articles of late on how to use OpenSSO 8. The latest one shows how to use OpenSSO and simpleSAMLphp to federate between an identity provider application written in Java and a service provider application written in php. The article uses SugarCRM, an open source php application, as an example. Check out the article and try it out if you have time!

Sun Gartner WAM Leader Agaaaaaaain!

I'm thrilled to say we were positioned as a leader in the Gartner WAM MQ again this year. I'm very happy with the results and encourage you to focus on the strengths and weaknesses of each vendor rather than the color of the pretty dots. :-) Below is the image and Sun's strengths and weaknesses. We thought our growth was pretty impressive last year, Gartner didn't agree. Don't worry about that though, because we're just getting started. In fact, our product revenue grew by 30% last year. If you're interested in reading the whole report click here.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS

Product: Sun OpenSSO Enterprise (formerly Sun Access Manager)

Sun is a leader in the WAM market, due to a combination of technical platform expertise, diverse and experienced partnerships in consulting and SI; a growing customer base; and consistent customer service. OpenSSO Enterprise is a full-featured product, with identity federation, SOA capabilities and built-in Web services security functions.

Strengths

\* Due to technical platform expertise, diverse and experienced partnerships in consulting and SI, a growing customer base, and consistent customer service, Sun is a leader in the WAM market.

\* OpenSSO Enterprise is a full-featured product, with built-in identity federation, SOA capabilities and Web services security functions.

\* Sun plays a leadership role in open-source WAM through the OpenSSO project, which gives the company a potential customer base and the benefit of the efforts of the community that has developed around OpenSSO. When this option is included, Sun has the widest variety of pricing options for a WAM offering, and also has appealing standard pricing.

\* Sun has focused on ancillary functionality to ease deployment, including federation partner offerings ("fedlets"), as well as standard, out-of-the-box task-based workflows.

\* Sun's Partner Advantage Program remains a model for covering consulting, system integration, VAR and independent software vendor (ISV) needs for IAM customers.

\* OpenSSO Enterprise now includes Microsoft SharePoint support and a fully functional security token service.

Caution

\* Sun has a large customer base for OpenSSO Enterprise; however, growth in the customer base was relatively flat in 2007.

Entitlements Pyramid Scheme

DANGER, WILL ROBINSON! DANGER!

There's a new pyramid scheme hitting the world of identity called entitlements management. It's sprouted up as a new space and lots of vendors are selling standalone entitlement management solutions that customers purchase and deploy in to their environments. I just don't get it! Web Access Management solutions were built to do this. Rather than create a completely separate solution to deploy and maintain in your environment why not leverage that?

So . . . This rant is aimed at telling you three things about Sun's entitlement management plans.

1. We are in the process of expanding OpenSSO to handle Fine Grained Authorization / Entitlement Management out-of the box! We will NOT sell you another thing that you need to deploy in to your datacenter.

2. You will see this in OpenSSO Express by late Spring / Early Summer! Yep. This one is in the works and it's going to be very cool. We have some slick ideas and this is going to be our next "fedlet."

3. It will be all be open source! You heard that right. Everything we do will be available via the opensso community and free to use. If you are interested in contributing let us know.

Sun will be the ONLY provider to offer a single solution that not only does access controls, federation and secure web services, but also entitlement management. Stay tuned for more to come!!!!

Have You Seen The IdentiCat?

The identicat is on the lamb and has gone "Patrick Swayze" on us. The SecondLife 5-0 are looking for him, but he is nowhere to be found. Apparently he has been promoting Open Source activities while bboying around Sun island. It's not illegal to talk about open source or bboy by themselves, but combined they are banned.

Rumor has it that the IdentiCat plans to hold an illegal meeting on 9/30 at 8AM PT on OpenSSO Enterprise, a highly controversial offering that has scared many traditional software vendors for it's free-wheeling nature. OpenSSO has been the darling of the people and has been viewed as an identity "Robin Hood" for the masses. It is unknown whether or not the IdentiCat will show up, but local citizens have been circulating an online registration form to get people to attend the showdown!

SecondLife 5-0 are expected to be out in force!

Meet Mr. Winky The IdentiCat Live!

SL Enquirer, Palo Alto, California
Friday, September 5, 2008

Several weeks ago two men claimed to have discovered the existence of an IdentiCat in the woods of Sun Island in Second Life. The two men, Daniel Raskin and Jamie Nelson, promised physical evidence of the creature. According to Pat Patterson, head of a group called Searching for IdentiCat and a former farmer and haberdasher from England, "the video is proof that the IdentiCat lives! If you don't believe us then join us September 30 in the forests of Sun Island to hear the IdentiCat talk about the magic of OpenSSO Enterprise 8. Register early because we're expecting a very large crowd!"

Below is the first video ever captured of the magical IdentiCat in action . . .

California men claim they found IdentiCat

SL Enquirer, Palo Alto, California
Friday, August 15, 2008

Whenever someone reports sighting the hairy beast of yore (details always fuzzy) or capturing the hirsute humanoid on film (images always grainy), it scares up a dubious debate of international proportions. Friday was just the latest episode in the IdentiCat show, as unreal as it may be.

Two men who claim to have stumbled across an IdentiCat in the woods of Sun Island in Second Life indignantly stood by their story at a news conference in Palo Alto during which they offered a picture as evidence and acknowledged they wouldn't mind making a few bucks from the "find."

"Everyone who has talked down to us is going to eat their words," predicted Jamie Nelson, Director of Access Management and Federation at Sun Microsystems.

Nelson and Daniel Raskin, a Product Line Manager at Sun, announced the discovery in early August to close friends and co-workers. Although they did not consider themselves devoted IdentiCat trackers before then, they have since started offering weekend search expeditions in Sun Island for L$499. The specimen they took a picture of, the men say, was one of several Cat-like creatures they spotted cavorting in the woods. IdentiCats, thought to be fokelore until today, are famous for their innovative thoughts on identity management and gifted abilities of identity prescience.

As they faced a skeptical audience of several hundred journalists and IdentiCat fans that included one curiosity seeker in a Chewbacca suit, Nelson and Raskin were joined Friday by Pat Patterson, head of a group called Searching for IdentiCat. Other IdentiCat hunters call Patterson a cheap huckster looking for media attention.

Nelson and Raskin plan to release a video of the IdentiCat in the next few weeks and have announced that they will be hosting a coming out party and presentation by the mysterious IdentiCat in October around access management, federation and secure web services. Stay tuned for more information.

Free OpenSSO Self-Paced Labs Now Available!

Developers interested in learning access management and federation tend to be focused on solving a specific problem and have constrained time. They need to be provided tools that help them implement their solution quickly, while simultaneously educating them on how to use the product in complex environments.

To help ease this pain and provide community members pragmatic ways of introducing customers to OpenSSO, we are now providing self-paced labs that focus on teaching users how to do essential tasks such as deploying multiple instances, SSL-enabling them, installing a software load balancer and configuring session failover. The labs are 100% FREE and are a great primer for learning about OpenSSO on your own.

Check them out on the newly launched OpenSSO.org training page.
