Cloud migrations begin with an appetite to move an existing workload from a data center or Cloud Service Provider (CSP). Starting with a review of the targeted application stack, then creating a comparison to how much more durable, accessible, and available the resources are on the chosen cloud provider to complete the migration. This can be tricky if you don’t have the stomach for it. Great news! An Oracle Partner with 15 years of deep expertise in classified, more commonly known as air-gapped clouds, has a solution to simplify this move.
The software company is Sequoia Holdings, and the patented product is…wait for it…PathFinder. The latest offering from the team that brought the government cloud world Combine, the high-side emulation software in 2015. PathFinder gen-one is capable of analyzing your current cloud tenancy in any CSP and reporting to you just how hard or easy it may be to make the cloud-to-cloud resource transitions.
PathFinder operates as an agent or a SaaS offering, and assumes a read-only role in your CSP account, then evaluates the specific resources running in that account. The software user specifies a target CSP to evaluate migrating to, then PathFinder presents a report summarizing the menu of options and scoring recommendations to complete the migration. It also maps individual resources to potential migration options in the target CSP. When operating as an agent, PathFinder ensures that all data regarding your workload resides within your cloud account and that you have full control over the data flow. This is a key feature for data security.
Under the hood, PathFinder doesn’t just look at capabilities at the service level. It examines a full set of resource attributes and makes a tailored recommendation based on those attributes. For example, when PathFinder evaluates managed database offerings in a CSP, it makes different recommendations based on diverse levels of risk, effort, and cost of ownership created by the rules engine, version, scaling attributes, underlying technology, and capabilities of each individual managed database. This means you are getting recommendations that have been specifically tuned to your cloud resources. Additionally, PathFinder operates not just between cloud providers, but between regions within a cloud provider.
Struggling to understand the level of effort to migrate from OCI commercial to Oracle Secret region? PathFinder can quantify that for you too!
“This is a game changing technology that will transform the multi-cloud and cloud migration landscape!” – Stephen Mouring, Sequoia CTO.
Using Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) as an example, assuming Pathfinder has scanned a cloud workload running in another CSP first, the PathFinder GUI provides a granular report showing how specific resources would migrate to OCI from the source CSP along with the aforementioned summary. This allows users operating at the program management level to triage migrations and do decision making, while also supporting users at the technical level who must actually perform migrations. As new offerings are available in OCI and other clouds, the changes are reflected to show the new options for transitions or multicloud adoption. Additionally, it has a power-user capability to tailor the rules engine translations to meet your business needs. This makes it easier for customers to quickly launch migrations of existing enterprise workloads, deliver better reliability and performance for all applications, and utilize the complete services customers need to build innovative cloud applications with Oracle Cloud.

“Having a tool like this makes examining cloud options easy for customers,” said Jennifer Beatley, VP of Intelligence and Space Sales in the National Security Group at Oracle. “Eliminating time in the process to move a mission critical workload is paramount.”
Accessing the move from cloud-to-cloud couldn’t be easier or more transparent with Pathfinder. Having this option on your side, would be like heading to the grocery store with a list of all the brands you currently consume and having nutritional assessment software let you
