employee experience

Employee experience matters. It is not just a nice-to-have but a strategic investment that can result in significant returns in terms of performance, retention, and innovation. A focus on employee experience not only boosts employee morale but also drives tangible business outcomes. Organizations that provide positive employee experiences are more likely to create loyal and committed employees who contribute to organizational success. It’s not just about perks and benefits, but about creating a holistic environment where employees feel engaged, empowered, and aligned with the organization’s mission. When employees have a positive experience, the company benefits from a motivated workforce, stronger brand reputation, and long-term success.

While a Human Capital Management solution can play a significant role in supporting and enhancing employee experience, it cannot solely elevate the experience. A system can improve efficiency, streamline processes, and offer tools that empower employees, but true employee experience is a holistic concept that goes beyond just technology or systems.

The Grim Reality

Creating a positive employee experience is critical to running a successful business in today’s competitive landscape. Positive employee experiences generate favorable results, contributing to the overall health and success of businesses. On the other hand, employee dissatisfaction can cascade through the organization, leading to stagnation in innovation, declining customer satisfaction, and reduced profitability. Unfortunately, many organizations struggle to prioritise employee experience. As a result, this leads to negative consequences that impact their business outcomes.

According to Mercer’s UK Working Lives Report, disengaged employees in the UK cost businesses an estimated £52-£70 billion per year in lost productivity and increased recruitment and retention costs. Seventy-one percent of UK employees are looking for new job opportunities indicating a significant dissatisfaction with their current employee experience. These statistics highlight the significant impact a bad employee experience can have on the success of the UK businesses. Furthermore, according to a recent Engage for Success Task Force report, only 36% of UK employees are highly engaged in their jobs, and the UK’s productivity levels lag behind other major economies. (See Reference 1)

Findings from other studies clearly indicate that a poor employee experience has ripple effects on productivity and overall business outcomes. (See Reference 2)

  • The majority of the world’s employees (59%) are not engaged, and 18% are actively disengaged. (Gallup, 2023)
  • Low engagement costs the global economy US $8.8 trillion and accounts for 9% of the global GDP. (Gallup, 2023)
  • Forty-nine percent of employees feel that their organization isn’t delivering on the experience they promised. (Kincentric, 2023)

According to IDC’s latest Future of Work Employee Experience EMEA Survey, 63.6% of employees in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region are unhappy with their employers. This alarming statistic indicates that nearly two-thirds of businesses in EMEA are vulnerable to the risks associated with poor employee experiences. (See Reference 3)
