In a prior blog post we outline Oracle’s best practices for data migration of predominantly open transactions to Oracle Cloud ERP.

In this blog post we focus on retention options for historical ERP legacy data.

When planning the best approach for retention of ERP legacy data you need to consider:

  • legal requirements for data retention (usually stipulated by regulatory authorities)
  • compliance to local data protection regulations such as GDPR or CCPA
  • reporting needs
  • data access and security needs
  • technical and functional skills required to access ERP legacy data
  • resource effort
  • costs (licenses, subscriptions, support, and maintenance)

Oracle has produced a document that outlines four data retention options for ERP on-premise legacy data, as follows:

Option 1: Keep your ERP legacy system running on your existing IT infrastructure with read only access

Option 2: Migrate your ERP legacy instance to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

Option 3: Backup your ERP legacy data onto a database and build inquiry forms and reports on the data

Option 4: Combine your legacy ERP data and current Oracle Cloud ERP data in a data warehouse

To learn more about the considerations for each option refer to the business brief document here:

Conclusion

ERP data retention requirements typically vary by country. Review the above options with your IT and  Finance departments as well as your auditors. Then, select the best option(s) to meet your enterprise needs in the countries in which you operate.
