If you're running a Documaker system that includes the WIPedit component, it's likely that you're staring down an upgrade in the near future. Why? Because Microsoft is ending support for IE 11 on most operating systems in June 2022. Microsoft recommends that customers migrate to Edge or Edge with IE Mode, which will be supported until at least 2029. To help in your decision making for upgrading, this blog post will consolidate information about current and upcoming versions of WIPedit, and other features.
WIPedit
The following table describes the current state of WIPedit and the intended future state of WIPedit in forthcoming releases.
| WIPedit Version | Features |
|---|---|
| 12.6.4 |

| 12.7.0 |

| 12.7.1 |

Thin Client Editor
The Documaker 12.7.1 release is scheduled to include the new Thin Client Editor (TCE), a pared-down data entry facility that does not require any client side components other than the browser. TCE is an alternative user experience for forms interactivity, where previously the only option was WIPedit. TCE provides a streamlined UI that allows an application to quickly capture user input and flood variables on form templates. TCE is not a full replacement for WIPedit. It does not provide WYSIWYG templates data entry, and does not provide all of the Document Automation Language (DAL) capabilities that WIPedit does. If you are considering streamlining your applications, or looking for a lightweight option to support more devices for data entry, TCE is an optimal choice.
Key features:
- No browser requirements
- Pure HTML/CSS/JavaScript
- Alternative to WIPedit
- Lightweight data entry
- No Template WYSIWYG
- No DAL support
Planning Ahead
As you can see from the information above if you're running Documaker 12.6.x or earlier, you have some decisions to consider:
- If you have Documaker 12.6.x, plan to complete an upgrade to 12.7.x before May 2022, when 12.6.x enters Sustaining Support.
- If you are using WIPedit and need to get off of IE by June 2022, you should target the WIPedit 12.7.1 release.
- Upgrading from previous WIPedit versions may require some changes to your applications, as the implementation model for WIPedit may change. Stay tuned for additional information as it becomes available — in the meantime, catalog your applications and the model(s) used to interact with WIPedit so you can plan appropriately once details about WIPedit 12.7.1 become available.
- If you have requirements to support alternative user experiences for data entry such as mobile/tablet where WIPedit was not available, consider the Thin Client Editor.
