Lights, camera, CLOUD!

At one week out from the event, we’re proud to say that Oracle CloudWorld 2022 was a hit! From the palatial event space at The Venetian and Caesar’s Forum, to the swirling purples and blues decorating the signage, OCW was home to thousands of developers passionate about the cloud, excited to make new connections, and maybe most importantly, level up their technical knowledge of Cloud Native development, DevOps, AI/ML, Databases, and more.

In the seriously dynamic Developer Hub called DevNucleus, you could see it all – from heads-down, focused learning to music, drinks, and the (simulated!) roar of an F1 car.  Everywhere you looked, you could find groups of developers talking tech, making connections, and following along with demos, hands-on labs, and hackathons.

And that was just the beginning. The real highlights of OCW were found in the quality of the technical content and the way that attendees got to celebrate the cloud with each other.

So what kinds of things happened at Oracle CloudWorld 2022?

First, to put things in perspective, a whopping 5,620 gallons of coffee and tea were brewed (and a few adult beverages consumed) for CloudWorld this year, fueling over 340 developer sessions.

Some of those session highlights include a demo from Hacklab Foundation’s Hamzah Bawah. Hamzah’s talk, “Distracted Driving Detection using Deep Neural Networks” demonstrated creating distracted driving detection models though deep learning approaches for detecting distracted driving. Then there was Daniel Mangum’s demo “Build Your Cloud, Run It on Oracle” that showed attendees how to build their own cloud platform using Crossplane, an open source CNCF project built on Kubernetes that provides ongoing reconciliation, composable abstractions, and multi-cloud integration capabilities.

Other highlights include the unveiling of the world’s largest Raspberry Pi cluster (that we know of)! Developers from all over lined up to take a selfie with this behemoth cluster. And speaking of selfies, attendees formed a long line to take selfies with the Premier League Trophy. Rumor has it that the elusive creature known as Devy, the DevRel team’s mascot, was also seen taking pictures with attendees.

And how could we not mention the massive gaming presence at OCW? Of course, Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen stopped by to show all of us how it’s done, and by “it” we mean setting the pace to beat on an F1 simulator and bringing a warm presence to OCW.

Here’s the breakdown of OCW’s race against Max (or, as it was tagged on Twitter, #beatMaxV):

  • 3 Simulators
  • 2 Leaderboards
  • 76 Sessions
  • 241 Unique racers
  • 32+ hours of racing time

On the other end of the gaming spectrum, vintage arcade games also gave attendees an opportunity get nostalgic between sessions.

Gaming was a huge part of CloudWorld’s keynote too. Bo English-Wiczling, head of Developer Relations at Oracle, sat down with Mosaic ML’s CEO, Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Application Development Lead, and Sail GP’s CTO to discuss how cloud technology meets the needs of large-scale sports organizations. Bo also announced a redesign of the developer.oracle.com site and unveiled the Luminaries program, Oracle’s official developer community for developers seeking community, exclusive technical content, and more. As Bo mentioned at CloudWorld, you can sign up to be a Luminary today!

Where do we go from here?

When it comes to the wider landscape of in-person events, so much has changed from just three years ago. For very obvious global reasons, yes, but also at a more local level. Oracle OpenWorld has evolved into Oracle CloudWorld and so too has our approach to connecting with you – developers who take seriously the tools they work with and the knowledge required to make those tools build wonderful, game-changing things.

All in all, CloudWorld 2022 was one for the books! So much so that we’re doing it again next year. We hope you’ll save the date for CloudWorld 2023, pn September 18–21 in Las Vegas.
For now, we’re celebrating all-things open source at KubeCon in the Motor City. But if you want to connect with us, join our public Slack space! And if you really want to connect with other developers who are as passionate about Oracle products and OCI development as you, consider becoming a Luminary. Imagine the feeling of meeting Luminaries online, then actually seeing each other IRL at the next CloudWorld – it could happen!

Until next time!
