Quick question – where can you find the center of America’s auto industry, the hotbed for the Motown sound, and the home of the Detroit-style pizza? That last might have given it away, but that’s right – Detroit, MI!
These are some of the most well-known features about Detroit which just so happens to be the host for KubeCon and CloudNativeCon North America 2022.
This is the largest cloud-native, open-source event globally. With 70% of the 2M developers worldwide using open-source tools, this is the place for developers to meet and learn about many open-source technologies.
The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team is showcasing our innovative products and solutions to the vibrant Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) developer community at this year’s conference. KubeCon 2022 is going to be extra special, and we look forward to meeting you in person or virtually.
Oracle is a proud platinum member of the CNCF with commitment to the open source community and simplifying cloud native application development. OCI Cloud Native services, for example, are built on CNCF open-source standards, including 100% upstream compatible Kubernetes, CloudEvents, and more.
And after all, open source is at Oracle’s core. Just recall our participation in open-source organizations, contributing to projects, and enabling the use of open-source technologies on our cloud platform. At the end of the day, our goal is to empower developers through open-source projects, tools, and support for whatever you are building and wherever you are in your cloud journey.
Here are some developer-focused updates leading up to KubeCon:
- Kubernetes: Our open source based Oracle Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) service offers support for upstream Kubernetes minor versions within 90 days. The service continues to support three minor versions for new clusters, and currently supports 1.21 to 1.24. Oracle Container Engine for Kubernetes now supports VCN native pod networking. This new CNI plugin provides pods with an IP address from the VCN CIDR, offering the same network performance as virtual machines. Pods are now directly routable, have access control using security rules, traffic analysis with flow logs and a consistent high throughput, low latency.
- Service Mesh: OCI launched OCI Service Mesh, a free, managed service that simplifies the development and operation of cloud native applications. It enables security, observability, and network traffic management without requiring application changes. Developers now have a choice to use , Linkerd or OCI Service Mesh for their microservices.
- MySQL Operator: The MySQL Operator for Kubernetes supports the lifecycle of a MySQL InnoDB Cluster inside a Kubernetes Cluster. This goes from simplifying the deployment of MySQL Server and MySQL Router instances, including management of TLS certificates and replication setup, over ongoing management of those as well as support for backups, be it one-of backups or following a schedule. Documentation and GitHub repos are available.
- GraalVM Enterprise: In line with our commitment to provide a seamless cloud-native Java developer experience, we’ve made it easier for developers to use GraalVM Enterprise from OCI services like Code Editor, Cloud Shell, and DevOps. GraalVM Enterprise integration with OCI Code Editor and Cloud Shell enables you to onboard faster, edit and deploy high-performance Java, Spring Boot, and Micronaut application code from a browser, without any installation and configuration. With GraalVM Enterprise in DevOps build pipelines, you can use DevOps as your CI/CD platform to build and deploy high-performance Java, Spring Boot, and Micronaut applications on OCI. GraalVM Enterprise is available at no additional cost on OCI.
- Verrazzano Enterprise Container Platform: Earlier this year, we announced the Oracle Verrazzano Enterprise Container Platform. Verrazzano enables you to deploy cloud-native and traditional WebLogic Server applications on Kubernetes in multi-cloud and hybrid environments. Verrazzano is made up of a curated set of open-source components – many that you may already use and trust, and some that were written specifically to pull together all of the pieces that make Verrazzano a cohesive and easy to use platform.
This year, we will be showcasing solutions and best practices around Multicloud application development, DevOps, Kubernetes operations, and service mesh for microservices. Our KubeCon lightning talks and demos chime with both the spirit of KubeCon and Oracle’s past as a strong proponent of open-source technologies and it is part of our DNA. Oracle is a supporting member of the Linux Foundation, Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and more – so it’s in that spirit that we think you will love some of these lightning talks and demos:
• Cloud Native Application Challenges on Multicloud — We’ll discuss the challenges created with multicloud deployments and the evolution from monolith to multicloud
• Simplifying Kubernetes operations with OKE — a lightning talk providing an overview of a fully managed Kubernetes service that provides compute optimized for running container workloads
• Influence of Service Mesh on Cloud Native App Development — this demo illustrates how OCI Service Mesh makes it easier for developers to write cloud native apps by providing them mesh layer capabilities that they can use declaratively, without modifying their existing microservices
One thing you might want to do before traveling to Detroit is sign up for an OCI Free Tier account! This will allow you to follow along with a lot of the demos that showcase OCI’s power and ability to play well with other cloud services. Not required, but you may find creating your account before KubeCon helpful!
Oh, and if you’re asking if our swag this year is incredible, the answer is yes – it is.
We look forward to meeting you in-person or virtually at KubeCon 2022. Come join our Public Slack channel and we can stay connected.
