Popular culture abounds with examples of artificial intelligence gone awry. From HAL 9000’s emotionless apology to a distressed astronaut, to the various incarnations of the Terminator, to the Matrix series’ disturbing vision of humans as batteries, it’s easy to see why people may be a bit leery of the idea of thinking machines.

But humans have also embraced artificial intelligence, not just as cinematic good guys like R2D2 and C3P0, but also in our homes and even in our pockets, as we rely on Siri, Alexa, and other manifestations of AI for various tasks.

Those mixed feelings about artificial intelligence and machine learning are the backdrop for the conversation you are about to hear.

This program, Oracle Groundbreakers Podcast #376, brings together a group of software developers to discuss why they are simultaneously excited by and concerned about AI. The conversation was recorded on September 18, 2019 at Oracle Code One in San Francisco.

“AI and Machine Learning are very powerful. There are a lot of use cases where we can see that AI is the right solution. But as a consumer, as a regular human walking around the streets, I’m subjected to the results of these models, and this is the terrifying part.”

“If a child is lost you can use facial recognition to find the child very, very quickly. But on the other side you can also use it for something that is not so good — finding a person that should not be found.”

“It’s said that artificial intelligence is going to improve your life, but people have the fear that it’s going to take over their lives.”

Oracle ACE Director/Groundbreaker Ambassador Luc BorsLuc Bors
Partner/Technical Director, eProseed

“The science needs to push, push, push, do whatever is possible with new innovations, and push machine learning to the limit. Then there’s the ethics side of it. What are we allowed to do with it? What makes sense? What doesn’t make sense? But that shouldn’t stop technical people from innovating.”
