Template Builder Woes!

If you have been suffering with Template Builder not installing correctly, or like me, you have installed and uninstalled so many different versions you might want to clean house. Once you have cleaned up things should go more smoothly.

Thanks to Junichi, who is the Template Builder lead developer, for these clean up steps.

1. Uninstall BIP desktop from control->Add or remove programs.

2. Open explorer and go to "C:\WINDOWS\assembly".

3. Check if there are assemblies which start with "TB" If present, remove them all.

4. Open the MS Word startup directory and check there are no files there. The directory is normally the following.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name><Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

5. Open MS Word and check that you don't see the BIP tool bar.

-> If you see it, please move Normal.dot to another directory and try again.

6. Please check that the OS user you use has an administrator privilege on the PC, this is really important.

7. Please go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove programs and check if the followings have been installed.

Shared Add-in Extensibility Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (KB908002)

Shared Add-in Support Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (KB908002)

8. Install BIP Desktop again

Step 5 did it for me!

After following the 8 step plan, Im now clean and sober, sorry that's the other plan Im following. Should have said, your PC/laptop will be clean and fresh with a new working BIP install.

    I went into that ...
Another important step is to check that you have a compatible JDK version installed, and that your machine PATH (environement variable) is correctly set to it (that JDK must be the first JDK/JRE in your "PATH" !
And don't forget that a change in your PATH requires a machine restart to be effective !
(the JDK must be correctly installed before BIP desk installation !)
I've also seen that the directory C:\Documents and Settings\Cheers

The installer has issues with network drives it cannot write to. If your work has an automated script that changes your save location to a network drive change all the values to local machine for install.
    Tools-> options -> File locations
change all to c:\ if network drives.
That is what stopped my install from working until the consultant came by.

The template builder simply will NOT install! I click Template Builder for word language and it starts off, but then terminated with "UI language changed successfully". No template builder in word! I have uninstalled and done the steps above, but this does not help.

    Hello Again!
I am trying to publish a PDF output via XML P.The file has to be password protected and should be printed on a printer
    The problem i face is
    1) If the file is password protected, i can not print it.
So the pdf output was left unprotected and set the disable print configuration true with encryption level as Zero ( this is to disable the manual print option after opening the output)
    Now, it does not print.
The print job ends with error in both of the scenarios.
Have you faced this issue before, do you know any workarounds ?

I'm not sure what to do with step 7. Are these programs supposed to be installed or removed before I install the template builder? I don't have Visual Studio, so I can't download these items.

    Hi Tim,
we have a problem where we cannot install BI Publisher Template Builder because our Microsoft Office policy dictates that the Office Startup folder is on the network and shared, in order to distribute some Word Add-Ins amongst all Word users.
We've tried everything we can think of to get round this problem, but with no luck. Support are simply saying 'Startup folder must be local' but we can't be the only organisation in the world who are distributing Word Add-Ins in this way. It's totally supported by Microsoft to do this.
Thanks for any advice you can give.

Hi, I can't Preview the report through the rtf template. When I Load XML Data then Preview (in any format) then I just get a windows explorer window pop up directing me to C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Local. Under that path there is another folder \.metadata.
    Anyone seen this before?

Hi, when I try to use "Developer Tools" my IE is not able to open site. Not sure where theses tools live. Any idea what's causing it.

You mean the link in the front report catalog page right?
The actual files are buried in the folder structure of the install. Sorry, not near my laptop right now. Try doing a search for all files over 100Mb in the top directory of the install. That should trap it.

The BIP Desktop installation for is HORRIBLE.
I have gone through the above steps and yet it does not work.
Also have an SR with Oracle and they cannot figure it out too. They keep asking me to kill MS processes from the task manager.
Apparently, there is also a template installation log file ..... but it really does not say anything useful ...
Is there any other way to install the FOP engine on desktop and just use plain XSLT ? This RTF stuff is too much hassle.

Unsure which step it was but the whole process fixed the installation for me. Thank you!
I now find that when previewing a report in Word, it tries to write files to
    %programfiles%\Oracle\BI Publisher\BI Publisher Desktop\Template Builder for Word\tmp
This is not allowed as a limited user, you need to shim the product by granting 'modify' to this directory if you want to stay running as a limited user.
Could this temporary directory be moved to somewhere under %userprofile% please?

I need to be the end-user of the BI Publisher template builder add-in for word, but I do not have and cannot get admin rights to my box. Is there any workaround for this?
