The Unsung 11g Hero
By Tim Dexter on Nov 12, 2010
Doing more and more with BIP 11g and as I peel back the layers there is some great functionality. There are a few niggles for me but nothing that's a big issue. I have to admit I was not a fan of the Online Template Editor; I'm warming to it. My biggest issue is that it can not do enough ... yet! The dev folks have worked really hard to get what we have today and you can only cram so much into a finite time scale.
That said, I was recently asked to build out 5 Crystal 'look-i-likies'. I tried, I really did try to use the Online editor but it was not quite up to it. I managed to generate 1 out of the 5 in the online builder. That was a 4 'charter' and a pivot. I actually replicated that report in OBIEE Answers too; not sure it should have been in Crystal in the first place.
For the others, I needed PDF bookmarks, a more complex calculation and a few other requirements that the online builder could not quite deliver yet. Im sure they are going to be there in upcoming releases. For now, I fell back on my ol friend, the RTF template. I noticed some new features in there too, the new group left support is awesome!
Interest piqued, I thought I would find out what the complete list of new stuff was in the Template Builder for MSWord, thanks Junichi and Klaus. I was then going to ramble on writing about all the new stuff but then decided, pictures speak a thousand words and screentoaster was beckoning.
I have split the RTF Template new features into two movies. The first provides an overview and more detail on the new charts and gauges that are available in the chart builder dialog.
Its available via screen toaster:

Part II will be out next week at your local multiplex in awesome 3D technicolor. The premiere will be in my back yard on our inflatable 12ft screen. We'll have drinks with little umbrellas and posh looking canapes, if you are near by, drop in.
