What are VDEVs in ZFS storage and why should I care?

Steve Tunstall
Principle Storage Engineer
Hi everyone. I am Steve Tunstall, a storage pre-sales engineer in Southern California. I was working at StorageTek when it was bought by Sun, and then was brought into Oracle through the Sun acquisition. I've been the storage Engineer in this area throughout that time. I have been working with the ZFS Storage Appliance (ZFSSA) since the beginning and through it's evolution including all of it's name changes, software and hardware updates.

My ZFSSA blog started in June of 2011, and I have had a few interesting topics. One of those is about VDEVs, and why you should care about them. You can see it here. You may also want to read up on how to calculate the number of VDEVs you will get and a few other topics you will find before and after this blog entry.

Please reach out to your local storage engineer for more info. My team is all over North America, and we are free resources at your service.
