Live migration nu ook in VirtualBox

Mijlpaal voor Sun VirtualBox: de populaire applicatie doet met de nieuwe versie aan live migration van virtuele desktops.

Sun Microsystems heeft VirtualBox 3.1.0 deze week vrijgegeven, en naast de gebruikelijke bugfixes is de open source desktopvirtualisator uitgebreid met nieuwe functies. Belangrijkste verbetering is de toevoeging van Live Migration, dat Sun aanduidt als Teleportation.

Daarmee kan de gebruiker zijn virtuele desktops verplaatsen van host naar host, zonder dat deze tijdelijk offline moet worden gehaald. Live Migration is in bedrijfsomgevingen een veelgezochte functie, en de toevoeging moet van VirtualBox dan ook een serieuze concurrent maken van XenDesktop.

Dat is niet de enige toevoeging die de ontwikkelaars hebben gedaan. Virtuele desktops kunnen nu van iedere snapshot worden teruggezet. Voorheen kon dat alleen van de meest recente. 2D-versnelling wordt toegepast op de virtuele instances, waardoor de prestaties van bijvoorbeeld video flink beter moeten worden, en gaat het platform flexibeler om met storagetypes. Je kunt nu meerdere stations per type toepassen op willekeurig welke IDE- controller.

VirtualBox vormt het technische hart van de destkopvirtualisatiesoftware van Sun Microsystems, xVM. Het voormalige Innotek-pakket wordt vooral gebruikt om Windowsprogramma's in Linux te draaien.

Optimaliseer de desktop met Sun VirtualBox

Sun VirtualBox is een hypervisor die zowel op een PC als op een Server beschikbaar is. Op een PC is geeft het je de mogelijkheid om op je "host platform" meerdere virtuele machines, ofwel "guest platforms" te draaien. Sun VirtualBox is te downloaden via de site.

Sun VDI geeft ook de mogelijkheid om Sun VirtualBox als hypervisor op de server in te zetten. Support op Sun VirtualBox zit bij Sun VDI in de Subscriptie prijs zodat geen extra investering gedaan hoeft te worden voor de Hypervisor.
