Industry-Leading Performance and TCO Drive Broad Adoption of ZFS Storage Appliance

Widely adopted for enterprise virtualization, consolidation, data protection, and test and development, thousands of Sun ZFS Storage Appliance customers from around the world have achieved savings of more than $150 million in capital and operating expenses.
The Sun ZFS Storage Appliance delivers 1.6x greater density, and offers 49 percent lower TCO than NetApp and 40 percent lower TCO than EMC.

Sun Ray Connector voor VMware View 4 beschikbaar

Met de recente update van Sun Ray Server Software 5, zoals beschreven in de vorige blogpost, is ook de Sun Ray Connector voor VMware View 4 beschikbaar gekomen. Klanten hebben hiermee bij een VDI implementatie de keuze welke broker ze willen gebruiken waarbij onder andere de keuze gemaakt kan worden tussen Oracle VDI en VMware View.  De Oracle VDI broker kent momenteel naast de VMware vSphere hypervisor nog drie "desktop providers" te weten Oracle VM VirtualBox, MS Hyper-V en MS-RDS.

Through a combination of instructor-led lectures and hands-on labs, you are introduced to the following VDI components and features:

  • Sun xVM VirtualBox and VMware® Virtual Center desktop brokers
  • LDAP and Microsoft® Active Directory directory server integration
  • Open Storage platform for the back-end storage of user desktops
  • Sun Ray Software (SRS) and Sun Secure Global Desktop (SGD) for the display of user desktops
  • Sun VDI administration tools The workshop begins with a comprehensive overview of the VDI 3 architecture

As the workshop progresses, you use lab equipment to install and configure prerequisite components such as SGD and Sun VirtualBox so that when you install the Sun VDI software, all of the necessary components are available. Once you install the VDI software, you learn how to configure desktop providers, which host virtual desktops, and how to use front-end user access devices such as Sun Ray thin clients or a web browser with SGD to access assigned virtual desktops. You also learn how to manage pools of desktops and the various parameters which control the content and behavior of desktop pools. Failover and cluster configurations are also covered for large-scale deployments.

Oracle VDI 3.1.1 is gereleased

This is the first update to Oracle VDI 3.1. In incorporates a number of fixes, as you can read from the Release Notes. But the most important thing is really the support of the latest and greatest Oracle Sun Storage 7000 firmware 2010.Q1. Now VDI supports the COMSTAR stack, now you see a storage utilization that you always wanted to see. Way better CPU numbers, much better IOPS, online deduplication for those who look into application streaming. This storage/VDI combination really rocks.

Other improvements to be mentioned:

  • Win 7 support through the latest included SRS patch
  • VLAN support for Hyper-V
  • Loads of fixes included in VirtualBox 3.0.14
  • and many many more things.

Wil jij meer weten over de mogelijkheden van de UZI pas in combinatie met de Sun Ray?
Kom dan dinsdag 9 maart 2010 naar Sun in Amersfoort voor een workshop.

Met de integratie van de UZI-pas binnen Sun VDI / Sun Ray zijn zorgverleners nu dus in staat via een Sun Ray en sterke authenticatie (op basis van het certificaat dat op de UZI-pas staat) aan te loggen aan hun  gevirtualiseerde desktop omgeving. Hierna kunnen zij met de certificaten op de pas zich identificeren aan zorg gerelateerde web applicaties (EPD), dossiers / e-mails ondertekenen.

Met Sun VDI kan dit op een hardwarematige manier worden opgelost,  bijvoorbeeld door gebruik te maken van de Sun Ray 2FS. De Sun Ray 2FS zoals hiernaast afgebeeld,  heeft twee DVI uitgangen. Hierdor kan een sessie worden afgebeeld op twee schermen naast elkaar.  Dit in Xinerama mode waarbij de gebruiker hier  twee keer hetzelfde beeld ziet maar een lang gestrekt beeld van zijn desktop sessie. Het maakt daarbij natuurlijk niet uit of je hiervoor een Windows XP, Windows 7 of Ubuntu sessie displayed.

Maar zoals je wel vaker ziet zijn de softwarematige oplossingen nog veel uitgebeider. De Sun Ray Server Software is namelijk zodanig in te stellen dat er een Multihead opstelling van een aantal Sun Rays neer opgezet kan worden.  Hoe dit is te realiseren staat uitgebreid beschreven in de Wiki en komt ook aan bod in de Sun VDI Implementatie Workshops.

Softwarematig is het mogelijk om een VDI sessie op meerdere Sun Rays te displayen. Hierbij wordt een  sessie verdeeld over de aanwezige Sun Ray schermen. Op de afbeelding hiernaast worden 3 Sun Ray 270's gebruikt in een MultiHead configuratie.

De Sun Ray 270 is een Sun Ray met een geintegreerd scherm. Er is in deze opstelling dus geen andere hardware nodig dan deze 3 Schermen en het toetsenbord + muis.  Dit betekent dus ook dat er geen PC's onder het bureau stroom staan te gebruiken, warmte staan te produceren en geluid staan te maken.

In dit voorbeeld staan er 3 Sun Ray 270's opgesteld maar hetzelfde kan natuurlijk ook gerealiseerd worden met de andere Sun Ray types. Het maximale aantal Sun Rays dat in deze multihead opstelling geconfigureerd kan worden is 16. In het geval van de Sun Ray 2FS betekent dit dat er maar liefst 32 schermen aangestuurd kunnen worden.

De opstelling kan zowel in de breedte als in de hoogte worden geconfigureerd. Zo kun je een videowall maken of bijvoorbeeld een werkplek zoals je bij traidingfloors ziet. Onlangs heeft Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena op deze manier haar trainingfloor ingericht met MultiHead Sun Rays.

Onderstaande afbeeldingen laten nog een aantal opstellingen zien. Bijvoorbeeld een Windows XP sessie afgebeeld op een multihead Sun Ray 270 opstelling in een 3 bij 1 opstelling.
