REFERENCE: Latest ECMA-International 'standard' efforts for MICROSOFT. Simon, "Surprised by the 'outrage' expressed about ECMA's latest doings." FACT: ECMA-International is an IT industry lobbying organization located within the EU performing duties at the behest of their members (sponsors) request. Simply, member software is typically proprietary code, which might be fine in certain quarters, that may become an accepted 'defacto' IT industry standard. However, in our emerging 'unencumbered' hardware and software world this is rarely described as another new or welcome global IT industry standard. ECMA-International is yet another 'front' organization' in business to perform activities 'supporting' it's membership, at times onerous doings indeed. Simply, Another rather blatant example of 'vendor lock-in' via 'standards'. Thankfully, SUN is NOT a member of this described organization.
