The kernel developers note is really a very roundabout way of saying 'we don't want FSF redefining freedom for us in a way that might piss people off; we're pretty happy with the definition of freedom we've got, thanks.' I blogged in great length about all the things they got wrong here, and here.

It's like the GNU/Linux controversy with reversed roles ... this time people don't get what's bitten Linus to go into politics. I'm curious what he will do in the coming months, having gone from saying that v3 isn't right for the kernel in January, ranting about the evils of the FSF on groklaw in summer, to now holding a referendum to reassert himself that he isn't alone opposing FSF's scheming ways. There aren't that many options left to escalate that further, and derail gplv3 in the coming months, other than forking everything away from the FSF. The upcoming melodrama and chest-thumping will be quite funny to watch. The hillarious thing is that the good points raised by the devs around gregkh are being buried in many paragraphs of rather outlandish, rabble-raising stuff, guaranteeing that the only impact this will have is to rally the respective troops, rather than fixing whatever issues are there in the license draft.
