Migrate From Oracle Solaris 11 To Oracle Database 11gR2

Wait. What ?
Of course, even if you know only very little about IT, that just doesn't make sense, does it ?
How can you migrate from an operating system to a database ?
Well, technically, you can't.
But migrating your focus from one product to another at your company, that you can.

And that's what I did, as of today.

I joined the Database Product Marketing team at Oracle. Its core product.
That's after a bit more than 4 fantastic years focusing on Solaris, first as Technical Marketing Manager (at Sun), then as Product Marketing Manager (at Oracle).
The Oracle Solaris team achieved a lot recently, as I wrote about in my 2011 review.
I'm pretty sure Oracle Solaris will stay the #1 Enterprise OS for still a long time to come !

But, from now on, I plan to have interesting things to write about the most successful database on the planet
It's almost back to the roots, in a way. In my first job out of college, I actually was a certified Oracle DBA.

Solaris The Best Sun Invention ?

Happy Birthday !!
I remember Sun Microsystems' 20th and 25th birthdays quite well. Those were reasons to celebrate.
However, it slipped my mind that today, Feb 24th 2012, would have been Sun's 30th birthday.
How did I notice ?
I follow Scott McNealy on Twitter..
He started off with this tweet today:

He then started off with his first "recollection":

So Solaris is his first thought of great memories, and specifically inventions, in this case ?
Brilliant !

Oracle Solaris Near You

I really look forward to deliver the Oracle Solaris keynote in Los Angeles, CA, this week, as part of the event series "Datacenter Transformation: Engineered for Innovation".
In fact, there are many of those being held in North America in the upcoming weeks. Here's the overview.

One event series with much more focus on Oracle Solaris itself, also on a more technical level, is titled "Oracle Solaris 11 Technology Forum". You can look up the upcoming events in North America with this search string on the Oracle Events web page.
Keep looking for those, as many of the events will be added shortly.

In the EMEA region, Oracle runs very similar events than the Technology Forum very soon, except they call it "Tech Days". For German speakers, there are several ones upcoming in Germany and Switzerland. The appropriate information can be found here.

Again, keep checking the Oracle events page, searching for "Solaris" (or any other product, product family, etc. that interests you), and chose your region, country, language, etc. Other great examples of these (related) event series are the "Extreme Performance Tour" going on globally right now, as well as the "Oracle Cloud Conference".

Oracle Field Marketing does a great job in organizing many many of those on an ongoing basis, somewhere

Quote: "Customers have eagerly awaited Oracle Exadata running Oracle Solaris"

And as of today, this is available.
Read the announcement here.

Oracle Solaris has been the most preferred platform for Oracle databases for a long time, and now this is also available for the extremely powerful Oracle Exadata Database Machine.

It also validates, once again, Oracle's commitment to Solaris, and the great technology and features that will be part of Oracle Solaris 11, many of which are already available, fully supported, in this latest release, Oracle Solaris 11 Express.

Oracle Solaris Podcast Series

One of the very interesting things I do at Oracle is to produce the "Oracle Solaris: In a class by itself" podcast series.
Always interesting topics, always the great hosts, and always expert guests.

But what do I mean by "produce" ?
Well, I determine the topics, get the appropriate guest speaker(s) on board, write the speaker notes, coordinate the recordings between the usual hosts, the guest(s), and the recording studio, do the editing if necessary, and write up the title and the description of the final product.

All podcasts that have been produced can be found on "Servers, Storage, and Solaris Podcasts", a page that we share with related technologies (as the title implies).

As described on that page, you can follow new podcasts through RSS feeds, or even on iTunes (search for Oracle Solaris).

Enjoy !
