We should be seeing some street level views of the activity in Denver and highlights of anything that Lance finds scintillating during his time there.

When we’re thinking about customer engagement, we’re acutely
aware of all the forces at play competing for our customer’s attention. Solutions
that make life easier for our customers draw attention to themselves. We tend
to engage more when there is a distinct benefit and we can take a deep breath
and accept that there is hope in the world and everything isn’t designed to
frustrate us and make our lives miserable. (sigh…) When products are designed to automate
processes that were consuming hours of our time with no relief in sight, they
deserve to be recognized.

Now – this unto itself is obviously beneficial for their
customers who were previously burdened with having to do all of these tasks
separately, manually and inconsistently by nature. Now – all in one place and
free to their customers – a portal that ties it all together. They now have
built the platform to give their customers yet another reason to do business
with them – Their headline on their product page says it all: “Life is now easier to manage - All your instrument use and care in one
place – the no-cost, no-hassle Instruments and Services Portal.” Of course – it’s
very convenient that the company name includes “Life” and now can also promote
to their clients and prospects that doing business with them is easy and their sophisticated
lab equipment is easy to manage. In an industry full of PhD’s – “Easy” isn’t
usually the first word that comes to mind, but Life Technologies has now tied
the word to their brand in a very eloquent way.
Between our work lives and family or personal lives, getting
any mono-focused minutes of dedicated attention has become such a rare
occurrence in our current era of multi-tasking that those moments of focus are
highly prized. So – when something is done really well – so well that it becomes captivating and urges sharing
impulses – I take notice and dig deeper and most of the time I discover other
gems not so hidden below the surface. And then I share with those I know would enjoy and understand.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I must admit here that the
first person I shared the videos below with was my daughter. She’s in her
senior year of high school in the midst of her college search. She’s passionate
about her academics and has already decided that she wants to study
Neuroscience in college and like her mother will be in for the long haul to a
PhD eventually. In a summer science program at Smith College 2 summers ago – she sent
the family famous text to me – “I just dissected a sheep’s brain – wicked cool!”
– This was followed by an equally memorable text this past summer in a research
mentorship in Neuroscience at UConn – “Just sliced up some rat brain. Reminded
me of a deli slicer at the supermarket… sorry I forgot to call last night…”
So… needless to say – I knew I had an audience that would
enjoy and understand these videos below and are now being shared among her science
classmates and faculty. And evidently - so does Life Technologies! They’ve done a great job on these making them fun
and something that will easily be shared among their customers social networks.
They’ve created a neuro-archetypal character, “Ph.Diddy” and know that their world of clients
in academics, research, and other institutions would understand and enjoy the “edutainment” value in this series of videos on their YouTube channel that pokes fun at the stereotypes while also promoting their products at the same time. They use their Facebook page for additional engagement with their clients and as another venue to promote these videos.
Stay tuned to this Oracle WebCenter blog channel. Tomorrow we'll be taking a look at another winner of the Innovation Awards, LADWP - helping to keep the citizens of Los Angeles engaged with their Water and Power provider.

Reflecting on Oracle OpenWorld last week, we are even more
excited about the direction and momentum of Oracle WebCenter. It was a great
chance to share more with customers about how Oracle WebCenter positioning and

We also got the opportunity to see some of our customers at
the CAB and hear about their successes and future plans with our products. At
lunch I got to speak with the College of American Pathology, Eaton, Rolls
Royce, Chick-Fil-A, J.M. Smucker Company, and Jacobs Engineering. CAP has done
a great accounts payable integration, and is starting to expand their
implementation to cover employee onboarding. Chick-Fil-A, with their partner
Team Informatics, has been working to incorporate a highly complex security and
authentication scheme across all sites and related content. This is to ensure bothemployees and related departments, as well as
franchisees, are able to access and update content while limiting access and
rights to restricted information.It’s a
very creative security solution that is entirely role-based, simplifying the
security model and eliminating the need to define and manage accounts.
Thank you to the customers who joined us in presentations
and provided video testimonials. McAfee provided some great insights in our
panel on implementing a social business. And Chick-Fil-A and University of
Texas A&M provided very different perspectives on implementing content
management. Medtronic, Chicago Public Schools, McAfee, Agilent, and BDO were
all able to record some great videos – we’ll see those rolling out on the
Oracle website in the next few weeks. You can see an on-the-fly video we did
with Agilent here.
Everyone was very engaged with Oracle WebCenter and the User Engagement Platform. We also had a great announcement of The Oracle Social Network by
Larry Ellison. Larry enjoys the product so much he did the demonstration
himself, showing all the ways people can connect and collaborate using this new
and innovative solution.

is delivering significant volume of new customers that can be leveraged for
proactive customer engagement, by providing a clear and compelling value

web and mobile devices. Their predominant platform for sharing this information
with their customers in office visits has become the iPad. Not only is their
content more up-to-date, but it is more compelling, incorporating video as well
as high resolution graphics. Medtronic has become the largest corporate
implementation of the iPad, with over 10,000 units in use.
The Medtronic iPad application, created by Fishbowl

Ministerie is the Public Prosecution Officefor The Netherlands. With their partner Deloitte
Consulting and WebCenter partner Onior they have streamlined the process in order to bring cases digitally to the
Judiciary Courts. Oracle WebCenter is the core solution for the storage
providing a 360˚overview of all case related files, and resulting in a better
end-user experience, better performance, more stability and enhanced storage
capabilities. Openbaar Ministerie has replaced all content related legacy
systems and migrated all functionality successfully to the Oracle WebCenter.
This year there will be a migration of the current infrastructure to Atos
Origin, including using a dedicated Exadata machine for the storage of metadata of the filed Case content.
National Schneider National won HonorableMention for this WebCenter project, which is part of a much larger
program that transforms Schneider’s business processes and end to end
technology platform, providing consistency and simplicity of architecture,
reduction in long term costs, and improved usability of the solutions for both
internal and external users. Schenider provides two separate WebCenter Portal
solutions, one for Drivers and another shared by both Customers and Service
providers. The drivers portal provides content updates and driver feedback
through forms and polls. Business leaders are able to make changes and updates
to the content on a daily basis without IT involvement.
We will provide more in-depth customer profiles on the
Innovation Awards winners in the next few weeks. Overall, from the announcement
to the customer conversations to the sessions, we enjoyed the incredible
momentum we are feeling around Oracle WebCenter.
The Oracle Innovation awards nomination deadline has been extended to July 29, 2011. This is a great opportunity to get a free pass to Oracle OpenWorld 2011, October 2-6 in San Francisco. You can find out more about the nomination process on the Innovation Awards page on Oracle.com.

“A successful move in one area won’t be recognized and rapidly implemented in other areas to multiply the benefits, or worse unsuccessful ideas will get repeated adding to the cost and time wasted. That’s where the need to really address the combination of social networking, collaboration, knowledge management and business information is required.”
Without communicating what works and what doesn’t, the innovations of our organization may be lost, and the failures repeated. That makes sense.
If you liked Andy Mulholland’s blog post, you need to hear Howard Beader’s presentation at Enterprise 2.0 Conference on innovation and the role of social media. (Howard will be speaking in the Market Leaders Session at 1 PM on Wednesday June 22nd). Some of the thoughts Howard will share include:
• Innovation is more than just ideas, it’s getting ideas to market, and removing the obstacles that stand in the way
• Innovation is about parallel processing – you can’t remove the obstacles one by one because you will get to market too late
• Innovation can be about product innovation, but it can also be about process innovation
This brings us to Andy’s second issue he raises:
"..the need for integration with, and visibility of, processes to understand exactly how the enterprise functions and delivers on its policies…"
Andy goes on to talk about this from the perspective of compliance and the CFO’s concerns. And it’s true: innovation can come both in product innovation, but also internal process innovation. And process innovation can have as much impact as product innovation. New supply chain models can disrupt an industry overnight. Many people ignore process innovation as a benefit of social business, because it is perceived as a bottom line rather than top line impact. But it can actually impact your top line by changing your entire business model.
Oracle WebCenter sits at this crossroads between product innovation and process innovation, enabling you to drive go-to-market innovations through internal social media tools, removing obstacles in parallel, and also providing you deep insight into your processes so you can identify bottlenecks and realize whole new ways of doing business. Learn more about how at the Enterprise 2.0 Conference, where Oracle will be in booth #213 showing Oracle WebCenter and Oracle Fusion Applications.
Organizations are always looking for ways to engage their employees. A sense of community within an organization can be an incredible morale builder. But more than that, an internal community can foster sharing of best practices and new ideas that drive profitability. New Look, a fashion retailer based in the UK, has engaged its 27,000 employees with online workspaces and social networking tools that it calls iLook. With blogs, wikis, and other social tools, New Look has fostered innovation by enabling teams to communicate and collaborate.
New Look’s iLook enterprise social network was recognized with the International Solution Award at the BT Expedite Retail Week Technology Awards. The iLook workspace provides New Look employees with access to company intelligence including corporate news, company videos, comprehensive staff directory and policy information, along with an online calendar and a cohesive marketing toolkit held as a central, shared resource for all marketing materials.
Marie Tysall-Blay, Head of Group Communications & Social Responsibility at New Look, said the underlying Oracle technology was “a critical enabler of our transformation from a United Kindom-centric business to a rapidly expanding international retail community with global brand values, strategies, and goals.”
Congratulations to New Look on their award. For more on this implementation, you can read the New Look press release or the New Look customer snapshot.
