Fishbowl Friday: Mobility for Customer Engagement and Employee Productivity

As we wrap up this week of focusing on mobility in the enterprise, we’ve been looking at ways that innovative mobile technologies produce increases in productivity, efficiency, and communication. Mobility is changing our day to day lives and our relationships to work, home and each other in significant ways. It is appropriate at this time that we yield the podium to one of our great partners, Fishbowl Solutions, for their perspectives on enabling mobile solutions with Oracle's Fusion Middleware.

The ECM Engagement Evolution: From Desktop and Laptop to the Mobile Device

Mobile devices have dramatically shifted how people contribute, consume, and share information. According to Inc. Magazine, 50 percent of all Internet access was done via handheld devices in 2010. Additionally, about 45 percent of mobile device owners are using their devices to download social networking apps. These statistics point to the popularity of mobile devices for personal use, but what about professional use cases?

The business reality for workers is that work is no longer confined within the walls of the office, and they need the appropriate tools to perform tasks regardless of time and space. This is especially true for on-the-go workers, such as sales reps, who rely on mobile devices to conduct the majority of their business. Advancements in mobile technology now allow sales reps to conduct web meetings, check email, or update customer information within a CRM system all from their mobile devices; however, when it comes to accessing crucial information needed for client interactions, information such as marketing collateral, product guides, or price lists, the capabilities are limited. This is all information that could be stored in an ECM system. Without this information, sales reps, and other workers on-the-go, either print the information and take it with them, download local copies to their laptops, or rely on email. Printing or downloading information immediately creates a separation from the trusted copy and prevents the sales rep from knowing if a change has been made. Sharing out-of-date or incorrect information with clients or prospects, could fracture relationships or terminate deals altogether. Distribution through email only perpetuates inaccurate information sharing.

We at Fishbowl Solutions are keenly focused on extending Oracle's Fusion Middleware product capabilities to mobile devices and are leveraging the latest technologies to enable content to be searched, accessed, shared, and updated from mobile devices, while ensuring that organizations can deliver a rich, intuitive, user experience to on-the-go workers. Here are some of the mobile offerings Fishbowl solutions provides:

iOS Mobility Suite API for Oracle Universal Content Management

This API provides organizations with a set of rules and specifications for the creation of custom applications on iPhone and iPad that utilize Apple's mobile operating system to interface with Oracle UCM.

The iOS API enables organizations to leverage and manage content remotely, and to store and synchronize documents locally and securely. Actions include searching the Oracle UCM repository, accessing saved searches and subscriptions, emailing content, approving and rejecting workflows, and checking in images directly from the mobile device's camera or picture library.

HTML5 JQuery Browser-Based UCM WebDav and Repository Search Access

JQuery Mobile gives users quick and intuitive touch access to the Oracle UCM folder repository and provides the ability to search on documents not held within folders. The JQuery Mobile framework offers a UI that currently supports more than 10 mobile platforms allowing users to access content on the go without being restricted by single-device support. We can then use the single HTML5 code base and port it across to specific native-based applications allowing us to leverage on the native features of mobile device platforms from Blackberry to Android to Win Mobile.

HTML5 Mobile Oracle WebCenter Spaces Port

Oracle provides an iOS iPhone application for access to WebCenter via the REST API. We have taken this concept and provided a simple, skinnable, mobile-based HTML5 website solution to give other mobile phone devices access to WebCenter Spaces using the Zepto.js framework. This can be converted to a native-based mobile application to enhance security or enable more options that can only be provided by the mobile device.

Touch Gestures in Browsers

JavaScript frameworks provide limited touch gesture access on browsers within mobile devices. We are currently working on writing our own set of gesture events for enabling multi-touch actions like rotation. Building on the Zepto JavaScript framework, our collection will contain upwards of 50 gestures. The latest mobile phones now support up to five simultaneous touches.

Morgan Stanley predicts that within the next five years mobile usage will outpace desktop usage. We are sure to witness this change in the workplace, as workers come to expect the ability to perform job tasks and access systems from their mobile devices. Medical device manufacturer Medtronic has already embraced Mobile ECM and deployed their solution to around 1,700 sales people who can now can quickly and easily access product marketing collateral when meeting with doctors. It appears the Mobile ECM evolution has begun, and Fishbowl Solutions is ready to assist your organization with its strategy. Feel free to contact us to discuss by emailing
