2010 Enterprise 2.0 Blazer: Portal Fusion Award
The Portal Fusion Award was given to the customer with the best migration from a homegrown or existing portal deployment to Oracle WebCenter Portal. This year's recipient was United States Senate and the partner involved in the implementation was BIAS.
The Sergeant at Arms is the largest department in size of staff and budget in the U.S. Senate. It is responsible for all Senate computers and technology support services, recording, photographic services, printing, graphics services, and telecommunications services.
Prior to implementing Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g, the Senate Intranet was running on Oracle Application Server 10g Portal (10.1.4). The biggest challenge was to keep up with the increased demand in collaboration, rich application interfaces, content management and the use of AJAX and standards such as JSR 168 and later 286.
The selection of Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g was the best fit for the Senate based on their requirements. They wanted a phased approach in migrating from Oracle Application Server 10g Portal (Oracle AS Portal10g) to Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g in that it was extremely important to come up with a plan where for a limited time, WebCenter Suite11g would run in parallel with Oracle AS Portal 10g. They first migrated all JEE applications from Oracle AS Portal 10g to WebCenter Suite 11g (WebLogic managed Servers) and bridged them back to Oracle AS Portal 10g. The second step is to convert many Portal Page groups to WebCenter Spaces using the Portal to WebCenter migration tool just released from Oracle product management. BIAS will be one of the first ones to use this migration tool!
The main reasons for selecting Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g were:
- Open and standards based technology
- Components offered in one suite including, E2.0, Web 2.0, Collaboration, Content Management, and Framework
- Obvious progression from Oracle AS Portal 10g
The Senate intranet provides all Senators' offices access to information pertinent to the daily operations of the Senate, from ordering office supplies to scheduling meetings, all in a secure environment. In order to keep up with the latest technologies, BIAS was brought in to migrate from Oracle AS Portal 10g to Oracle WebCenter Suite 11g. BIAS worked with the Sergeant at Arms staff to perform the migration to WebCenter Suite. BIAS trained the staff on the products and implementation and continues to act in an advisory role as the Senate moves its core technologies to WebCenter.
Accepting the award on behalf of United States Senate were Andy Le and James Pierce. Congratulations!
