2010 Enterprise 2.0 Blazer: Collaborative Community Award

The Collaborative Community Award was given to the customer with the best use of dynamic online communities to connect people, content & processes together to increase collaboration & knowledge sharing and improve access to information. This year's recipient was ING Turkey and the partner involved in the implementation was MSU Yazilim.

ING is a global financial institution of Dutch origin, currently offering banking, investments, life insurance and retirement services to meet the needs of a broad customer base. Going forward, ING will concentrate on their position as an international retail, direct and commercial bank, while creating an optimal base for an independent future for our insurance operations (including investment management). ING has main office locations in the Netherlands, North America and Australia.

Business Challenges

ING Turkey had an in-house developed intranet portal solution with a very poor content system included. This content system was just being used for publishing company-wide documents such as announcements. The Intranet was based on MS technologies, using ASP for UI and MS-SQL Server for the backend.

ING Turkey was also looking for a central content repository for all their departmental intranet portals' content, business processes, customer papers, etc. They wanted to get rid of multiple copies of the same content. Their CIO has wanted the bank to establish a standard and a scalable, open platform for managing their critical content and establish a strategic platform for building new content-centric applications. This platform would provide their content and their users with the appropriate amount of control and security. They also wanted to automate each phase of the content lifecycle from creation to destruction. Every department had very well defined internal content review and approval processes that they wanted to maintain.

A central location for content with a single source of truth and indexing the content so that users are able to quickly search and retrieve information was very critical for them. ING Turkey was using silos of MS SharePoint portal instances for each business department. There were multiple copies of the same content and different versions. The review and approval process for the content was manual which was causing the content publishing time too long. 

There were also a lot of content-centric business processes in the bank which need to be consolidated, and they required a robust content repository providing an open and standard platform for the applications. Governance and retention for the content was another challenge that needed to be managed. They were also having difficulties defining and automating enterprise content lifecycle processes.

Why Oracle?

Oracle WebCenter Suite has provided ING Bank a scalable, robust and powerful content repository with an open and standard platform that all their internal and customer-centric processes can get use of. Also, the functionalities like discussion forums, wikis, blogs, personal and group spaces and fast and easy development capabilities helped ING modernize their intranet portal very quickly.

Solution Overview

ING Turkey is using Oracle WebCenter Spaces and Oracle WebCenter Services for their Enterprise 2.0 platform. With the Oracle solution, ING Turkey offers a ready-to-use and well-integrated Enterprise 2.0 solution to their customers.  As a result, ING Turkey has a true intranet system which is used by both ING HQ and other ING branches.

This system is a new-faced collaborative intranet portal providing social services for employees and a central place to access both BPM workflow applications and documents. A Single Sign On (SSO) mechanism is also integrated with MS-Win native authentication, so no user-password is required to login. Also, the new intranet includes a fully enterprise-wide content system, with numerous Web 2.0 services like wikis, blogs, announcements and discussion forums.

The central portal is used by more than 3000 internal users to automate business processes, manage documents and contents of the company, and to generate reports and dashboards for sensitive data. For this purpose ING Turkey is also using Oracle Portal, Oracle BPM, Oracle UCM, and Oracle BI. Congratulations ING Turkey!
