WebCenter Customer Advisory Board meetings kick off Oracle Open World 2012!

Welcome to OpenWorld! OpenWorld 2012 got underway today with a series of meetings with the members of the WebCenter Customer Advisory Board. Led by the WebCenter Product Management team, these meetings are a great way for the product team and customers to directly interact and discuss real-life business challenges, product details and to discuss upcoming features and functionality.

This year, board members participated in discussions around live demos around product enhancements that will be featured throughout the coming week. Highlights included a variety of new mobile and social solutions, a great new user interface for WebCenter Content plus new Portal and Sites functionality that makes the experience for the everyday user a lot more pleasant.

The day kicked off with Roel Stalman, VP of Product Management, giving a detailed overview of what’s new in WebCenter. Given all the improvements to discuss, this session went over 2 hours! Roel showcased the brand new UI for Content, Portal and Sites. He also gave live demos of the new mobile apps for WebCenter Content, Portal and the Oracle Social Network.  The attendees then broke into sub-groups in order to deep-dive with Product Management for the Portal, Sites, and Content product areas on specific functionality and application integrations.

If you are here in San Francisco this week for OpenWorld, I definitely recommend stopping by the WebCenter area in the Moscone West Exhibition Hall to see some of this new functionality for yourself. And be sure to check out the WebCenter sessions throughout the week as those give us a chance to discuss direction and strategy, answer your questions and get your feedback and ideas.

For those of you could not make it to OpenWorld this year, we miss you! You can stay in touch with what is happening via this blog and by following #oow and #webcenter on Twitter. Additionally, we will be rolling out details on upcoming products and release info over the coming months via this blog and web seminars. Stay tuned!

Oracle OpenWorld Preview: Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge

Originally posted by Jake Kuramoto on The Apps Lab blog.

Noel (@noelportugal) and I have been working on something new for OpenWorld (@oracleopenworld) for quite some time, and today, I got the final approvals to go ahead with the Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge.

The skinny.

The Challenge is a modified hackathon, designed to run during OpenWorld and JavaOne (@javaoneconf), and attendees of both conferences are welcome to join and compete for the single prize of $500 in Amazon gift cards.

There’s only one prize, so bring your A-game.

The Challenge begins Sunday, September 30 at 7 PM and ends Wednesday, October 3 at 4 PM.

You can and should register now, but we won’t begin approving  registrations until Sunday at 7 PM. For legal reasons, you’ll need to register with a corporate email address, not a free webmail one, e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, ISP-provided mail, etc. If you work for a competitor of Oracle, sorry but you’re not eligible.

Everything you need is in the cloud, including support, but if you need help or have questions, visit office hours in the OTN Lounge in the Howard Street tent Monday, October 1 and Tuesday, October 2 4-8 PM to get help from the product team.

The judging begins Wednesday, October 3 at 4 PM. To be considered for the prize, you’ll need to attend to demo your working code to the judges.

Attendees with badges from either OpenWorld or JavaOne are welcome in the OTN Lounge, so you’ll need one of those too.

Did I mention, register now?

Be sure to check out Jake's original post for the long-winded explanations.

    Company Overview
JD Williams & Company Limited, is the UK's leading direct home shopping company, operating over 20 successful catalogue brands. The company was founded in 1875 by James David Williams, who in 1882, was the first to make use of the UK's parcel post service to send his company's products direct to his customers. JD Williams is the most successful direct home shopping company in the UK today, with over 2 million customers and 4,000 employees.

    Business Challenges
    The business challenges were to:

    • Manage and differentiate content of a large number of products and delivery it trough multiple channels
    • Increase the pace at which data gets onto the Web
    • Create the right processes between Merchandising and e-Business teams to reduce effort of deploying content
    • Integrate with the existing legacy system

    Solution Deployed
JD Williams implemented a Multi-Channel architecture using Oracle WebCenter Sites. The architecture is based on a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept of a highly reusable Business Service for Content.

They use a restful Web Services approach for the integration of data. Content data is supplied via RESTful templates for use by the customer facing live shop application. This data is returned as structured data as XML, and is generated using  Oracle WebCenter Sites templates accessing asset data using  Oracle WebCenter Sites tags, plus Java classes.

    Business Results
With the implemented solution JD Williams is now managing over 200,000 products with 1,7 millions options, 12 millions offerings and over a million images.

According to Gareth Samuel, Head of IT Architecture, JD Williams has got much more control over the content and can now more focus on the quality of the content which has a significant impact on their ability to deliver good quality to their customers.
