Sun is a founding member of the Internet Protocol for Smart Objects (IPSO) Alliance that was declared as one of Time magazine’s "Best Inventions of 2008"!!
What is the IPSO Alliance?
It is a group of high-tech companies, both vendors and users who
endorse the use of existing Internet Protocol (IP) protocols for connecting
'smart' objects and delivering information to and from those objects.
The aim of the Alliance is to
create a better understanding of IP and include understanding the industries
and markets where IP-based Smart Objects can have an effective role in growth
and organizing services.
What are “Smart Objects?
To quote…“Smart Objects are (any) objects in the physical world that - typically with the help of embedded devices - transmit information about their condition or environment (e.g., temperature, light, motion, health status) to locations where the information can be analyzed, correlated with other data and acted upon. Applications range from automated and energy-efficient homes and office buildings, factory equipment maintenance and asset tracking to hospital patient monitoring and safety and compliance assurance.”
Essentially a smart object can include any device/ anything that is network addressable.
