OWB 11gR2: Migration and Upgrade Paths from Previous Versions

Over the next several months, we expect widespread adoption of OWB 11gR2, both for its new features and because it is the only release of Warehouse Builder certified for use with database 11gR2. Customers seeking to move existing environments to OWB 11gR2 should review the new whitepaper, OWB 11.2: Upgrade and Migration Paths.

This whitepaper covers the following topics:

  • The difference between upgrade and migration, and how to choose between them
  • An outline of how to perform each process
  • When and where intermediate upgrade steps are required
  • Tips for upgrading an existing environment to 11gR2 without having to regenerate and redeploy code to your production environment.

Moving up from 10gR2 and 11gR1 is generally straightforward. For customers still using OWB 9 or 10.1, it is generally possible to move an entire environment forward complete with design and runtime audit metadata, but the upgrade process can be complex and may require intermediate processing using OWB 10.2 or OWB 11.1. Moving a design by itself is much simpler, though it requires regeneration and redeployment.

Relevant details are provided in the whitepaper, so if you are planning an upgrade at some point soon, definitely start there.

It is also strongly recommended that you contact Oracle support before undertaking an upgrade to check for availability of patches for OWB 11gR2.

Can we upgrade to OWB 11GR2 if we are running Oracle 10.2.0.3?

Robert, AFAIK, yes, that should work. My goal in the paper was to address people coming from 10.1 or 9.2, whose scenarios are the most complex. But I can see that I may want to put in more explicit upgrade path info for people on recent releases. -Antonio

Antonio, We are attempting to upgrade from OWB 10.1.0.1.0 to 11gR2. While googling around iam seeing details on Upgrade to 10.2.0.4.0 :- patch 6810189. Once upgraded to 10.2.0.40 can it be directly accessed using a 11gR2 client.

If by "accessed directly" you mean "Can OWB 11gR2 upgrade an OWB 10.2.0.4 repository", the answer is yes... Suggestion: contact support about OWB 11gR2 upgrade-related patches.

Hi, We have plans to upgrade our Database to 11.1.0.7. I wanted to know whether OWB 11.2 works with DB ver11.1.0.7. I read in some of the forums that OWB 11.2 supports only DB starting from version 11.2. Please suggest. Thanks

Hi

OWB 11gR2 also supports prior Oracle databases versions including 11gR1, see the documentation for details;

Trying to connect to an !!R2 database from an XP desktop running the OWB Design Center 11.2.0.1 and it does just fine. When I attempt to deploy any baseline ETL that were created from a vendor I get an error window that states:

RTC-5260: Failed to connect to Control
Center, Please check you have provided the
correct Host, user, password and Service Name.

String index out of range:0

When I click the OK box on this error, a "Connection Information: DEFAULT_CONTROL_CENTER" window comes up for me to login to BUT the "Net Service Name:" box is empty. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling this client software but it doesnt seem to make a difference. Last, I did try and add %OWB_HOME%\OPatch to the PATH in the setowbenv.bat file but this didnt seem to change the behavior. Any ideas?

Hi ,
Is it possible to use OWB 10GR1 Repository (in oracle 10gR2) on Owb 11G R2. Does the Repository needs to be migrated to higher versions?

Posted by guest on March 14, 2013 at 05:18 AM PDT #

The repository would need to be upgraded.

Cheers
David
