Why Unable To Stop Oracle iPlanet Web Server 7 Process And Admin Console Shows Status As "Not Running" When It Is Actually Running ?

If you are running Oracle iPlanet Web Server 7 on Linux, then you may hit this issue below.

See my writing at KM note:

How to Decrypt and View SSL Snoop Data With Wireshark for Oracle iPlanet (former SunONE) Web Server ?

Often, it is nice to see the SSL https traffic content in clear text for troubleshooting purpose, e.g. examine what headers/cookies values inside when something does not work.

I wrote this KM note:

How to Decrypt and View SSL Snoop Data With Wireshark for Oracle iPlanet Web Server (Doc ID 1455999.1)

which shows the steps needed to do this.

It is not for Oracle iPlanet Web server only, the same steps can be used to examine SSL traffic in other SSL servers.

You can login My Oracle Support (MOS) and see the details there.

How To Enhance Security on Oracle iPlanet (former SunONE) Web Server 7.0?

Web server security is a very important topic, so I wrote this Oracle KM note on this topic:

How To Enhance Security on Oracle iPlanet Web Server 7.0? (Doc ID 1500326.1)

I added many security tips inside, e.g. how to avoid XSS, CSRF, Slowloris, etc...

You can login My Oracle Support (MOS) and see the details there.

How to Set POST Request Body Size Limit In Oracle iPlanet Web Server 6.1 and 7.0

Very often, you like to set  POST Request Body Size Limit in a web server for different reasons.

I wrote two new Oracle KM docs on this topic:

1. How to Set POST Request Body Size Limit In Oracle iPlanet Web Server 6.1 (Doc ID 1327832.1)

2. How To Set POST Request Body Size Limit In Oracle iPlanet Web Server 7 (Doc ID 1297025.1)

web 6.1 SP11 64-bit download

If you need to use 64-bit web 6.1 SP11, you can download it at

This will allow you to use much more in memory address space.

e.g. for a 32-bit process, the theoretical max. memory per process = 4 GB,

a pmap will show,

vm40:/wlee/bits/tmp-web7.0u5> pmap 16908 | more
16908:  webservd -d /wlee/7.0u4/run/ -r /wl
00010000       8K r-x--  /wlee/7.0u4/run/lib/webservd
00020000       8K rwx--  /wlee/7.0u4/run/lib/webservd
00022000      56K rwx--    [ heap ]
00030000    3904K rwx--    [ heap ]
00400000  167936K rwx--    [ heap ]
DB87A000       8K rwx-R    [ stack tid=285 ]

......(note the above address = 8 \* 4-byte each = 32-bit address)

but if we are running 64-bit, then the pmap will show,

vm40:/wlee> pmap 3799 | more
3799:   webservd -d /wlee/7.0u5-64/ -r /wle
0000000100000000          8K r-x--  /wlee/7.0u5-64/lib/sparcv9/webservd
0000000100100000          8K rwx--  /wlee/7.0u5-64/lib/sparcv9/webservd
0000000100102000         56K rwx--    [ heap ]
0000000100110000       3008K rwx--    [ heap ]
0000000100400000     217088K rwx--    [ heap ]
FFFFFFFF3FCFA000          8K rw--R    [ stack tid=284 ]

......(note the above address = 16 \* 4-byte each = 64-bit address), so the theoretical max. memory per process = 16 TB, but of course limited by other factors, e.g. physical RAM and swap space, etc.

If you need more memory for your web server process (assume you do not have any memory leaks in your application, etc), then one option is to run 64-bit process.

How to log Host header in web 6.1SPx

If you need to see the incoming request Host header logged in the web server 6.1SPx logs, then you can try below:

add last one below in magnus.conf, i.e. %Req->

Init fn="flex-init" access="$accesslog" format.access="%Ses->client.ip% - %Req->vars.auth-user% [%SYSDATE%] \\"%Req->reqpb.clf-request%\\" %Req->srvhdrs.clf-status% %Req->srvhdrs.content-length% %vsid%  %Req-> "

then it will log the host header of the incoming request, e.g.

apple:/export/home/iws6.1sp10> telnet localhost 60103
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '\^]'.
GET /banner.html HTTP/1.1
Host: dummytest  (note this)

Web 7 Admin GUI not showing the proper running status of instance ?

Sometimes, if you set a too restrictive umask (e.g. 007) in the .profile file of the running uid of the web 7 instance server process, you may see the status of the instance server as NOT RUNNING in Admin GUI (even it is actually running). This is because the pid file in the <temp-path> directory is not readable by the admin server process running uid.

e.g. if .profile of uid=web has a umask = 007, then if cu login as web, then switch user to root, then startserv to start up a web 7 instance. If cu runs Admin server process as uid=web too, then the Admin GUI will show instance NOT RUNNING.

If you check cu temp-path at

apple:/export/home/iws7.0u3/https-www/config> grep temp-path server.xml

then check the pid file in above dir,

apple:/export/home/iws7.0u3/https-www/config> ls -l /tmp/https-www-8d5fe446
total 16
-rw-rw----   1 root     other          5 Aug 26 19:00 pid
srwxrwx---   1 root     other          0 Aug 26 19:00 webservd-wdog.socket
srwxrwx---   1 root     other          0 Aug 26 19:00 webservd.socket

(note the file permission, which is NOT world-readable, so if Admin process uid is not in this

group, it will not be able to read it properly).

When Admin process runs as uid=web, then it will not read above pid file successfully.
The Admin GUI will display it as NOT RUNNING even when it is actually running.

To fix it, use a less restrictive umask , e.g. umask 022, then the pid file will have :

apple:/export/home/iws7.0u3/https-www/config> ls -l /tmp/https-www-8d5fe446
total 16
-rw-r--r--   1 root     other          5 Aug 27 11:17 pid

(note - now is world-readable)

Then the Admin server process can read it properly and show it as RUNNING in Admin GUI.

The other possible fix is to use a uid in the same group (e.g. group=other in above) to run Admin process.

running php in web server 7.0ux

If you are running php as FastCGI  in web server 7.0ux, then the following links may be helpful.

You can see a list of FastCGI  parameters and their meanings in above.

You can see an example of FastCGI parameters in above php scalability test.

3. for  a detailed description of running php on Sun web server

4. Sun download center also has a php binary you can download at

"This add-on provides a pre-built PHP engine for use with Sun Java System Web Server 7.0. The pre-built PHP engine is optimized for the operating system platforms supported by Sun Java System Web Server 7.0. The PHP engine is provided in Sun Java System Web Server's native NSAPI library form as well as the popular FastCGI form. An installer is provided to ease installation and setup.

I downloaded and then tried in a Linux machine,

[root@magxxxx php]# bin/php -h

Usage: php [-q] [-h] [-s] [-v] [-i] [-f <file>]
       php <file> [args...]
  -a               Run interactively
-b <address:port>|<port> Bind Path for external FASTCGI Server mode
-C               Do not chdir to the script's directory
-c <path>|<file> Look for php.ini file in this directory
-n               No php.ini file will be used
-d foo[=bar]     Define INI entry foo with value 'bar'
-e               Generate extended information for debugger/profiler
  -f <file>        Parse <file>.  Implies `-q'
  -h               This help
  -i               PHP information
  -l               Syntax check only (lint)
  -m               Show compiled in modules
-q               Quiet-mode.  Suppress HTTP Header output.
-s               Display colour syntax highlighted source.
  -v               Version number
-w               Display source with stripped comments and whitespace.
  -z <file>        Load Zend extension <file>.

After I set it up and run phpinfo(), then it will show:

How to tell web server version ?

In 6.1 or 7.0  web server,

1. if this is a standalone installation,

then you can run

apple:/export/home/iws6.1sp9> find . -name webservd
apple:/export/home/iws6.1sp9> ./bin/https/bin/webservd -v
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP9 B01/11/2008 14:24

Or, you can always run,

 apple:/export/home/iws6.1sp9/> ./start -version
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP9 B01/11/2008 14:24

apple:/export/home/iws7.0u3/> ./startserv --version
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Sun Java System Web Server 7.0U3 B06/16/2008 12:00

2. if this is a JES installation, then you can run

 apple:/export/home/opt/SUNWwbsvr-JES3> -version
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP9 B01/11/2008 14:24

You will get following error if you run #1 above in a JES installation,

apple:/export/home/opt/SUNWwbsvr-JES3> find . -name webservd
apple:/export/home/opt/SUNWwbsvr-JES3> ./bin/https/bin/webservd -v webservd: fatal: open failed: No such file or directory

3. Summary:

In 6.1,  "start -version" will print out web server version.

In 7.0, "startserv --version" will print out web server version.

Web 7.0 U3 package-based patch is out in sunsolve

The JES package-based web 7.0 U3 patch is now out and available at sunsolve.

You can download it at  (for Solaris)

(this may require user login with valid support contract.)

First , you need to check if you are using a package-based web server 7.0.

If you are not sure, then read more at:

Also, you need to install the newer nss patch to make this newer web 7.0 U3 patch work,

read more at :

For other OS (e.g. windows, Linux, etc), you can see their corresponding patch numbers at Xref section at  (for Solaris)

You can see the release notes at

Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 Service Pack 9 International Release

I tried the latest web 6.1 SP9 International Release.

You can download it at

Sun Download link

The installation is the same easy.
It will ask one more question about Default Language.

See ScreenDump118.gif  below for the choice of default language.

the choice of default language

I tried Traditional Chinese because I am in Hong Kong.

Then, everything works the same well in the installation and later startup.

The good results are now localized default pages and error responses, e.g.

See ScreenDump111.gif  below for the default home page after install

default home page in Chinese

See ScreenDump112.gif below for the localized Chinese NOT FOUND error responses after install

localized Chinese NOT FOUND error responses

I opened the config files and found this below  in magnus.conf

DefaultLanguage zh_tw

So, I experimented and tried to change it to

#DefaultLanguage zh_tw
DefaultLanguage ja

then I restarted the web server and hit a page which does not exist.

It will show me Japanese Not Found error responses.
See ScreenDump119.gif below  for the JA responses.

Japanese Not Found error responses

Hope this will add more local languages you need in your site.
