Engaging Sun Employees in Virtual Worlds

As we have written before and as our SL Project Lead at Sun, Fiona Gallagher, states:
"Second Life is a great environment for Sun to reach out to customers with marketing messages, educational content, and live in-world events. Second Life is a public virtual world which is open to everyone for socializing, entertainment and virtual world exploration. It's a great place for Sun employees to get up to speed with virtual environments."
As part of our goal to help Sun employees understand and utilize the potential of virtual environments, we are doing a few things that are very hands-on and interactive with employees:
- Providing an "Introduction to Second Life Part 1" webinar. This is done via WebEx. We provide information on the very basics of Second Life, how to get started, what to expect, what Sun is doing in Second Life today and more.
- In "Introduction to Second Life Part 2", we ask that employees have their avatars and join us in-world (for most, it's their first time experiencing a virtual world) to take a tour of the Sun SIMS in Second Life. The goal is to increase their understanding of Second Life by getting in and doing something (taking a tour), and to see first hand what Sun is doing in this space. This immerses them into the environment quickly, and we think the experience really engages and motivates them to want to learn more as they begin to see the potential of virtual worlds.
- THEN - the Sun in Second Life Mentors offer in-world workshops (101a, 101b, 102, 103 and a building workshop). These workshops cover the basics of Second Life: communicating, sitting, walking, flying, customizing your avatar, inventory management, media, security, profiles, behavior, etc. A workshop schedule is posted and sent to all Sun avatars, and employees can join when it's most convenient for them.
blog more about that.
In additional to this immersive and interactive engagement, we will be rolling out short videos for Sun employees that they can watch and learn on their own on how to do specific things within Second Life. There are some really great learning videos on the Second Life website that we'll be pointing employees to as well.
Exciting stuff! We think these examples of way to engage and enable employees will prove to be invaluable.
