FRIDAY SPOTLIGHT: EMC VMAX and EMC VNX are Now Certified on Oracle VM

Oracle’s Storage Certification program enables established storage partners to qualify their storage systems for use with Oracle VM using an Oracle supplied storage qualification test kit.  When a storage vendor enables the Oracle VM Storage Connect plug-in, their customers will be able to provision that vendor’s storage through the Oracle VM Manager. This will enable simpler management of virtual infrastructure, as well as faster provisioning of solutions in a cloud environment.

EMC storage, including VMAX and VNX, has been tested using the Oracle ® VM Storage Connect Certification kit to achieve Storage Certification with Oracle VM Release 3.3.  and now listed on the Oracle HCL website for Oracle VM. This storage certification required strong collaboration between Oracle and EMC to ensure that adequate testing had been completed and the results met the highest standards. The rigorous process ensures that customers have full support from both Oracle and EMC.

Friday Spotlight: EMC PowerPath for Oracle VM Server

EMC and Oracle have a deep history of collaboration dating back to 1995. EMC is a Platinum Partner and as part of the OPN program gets pre-release access to Oracle code to test and to ensure that as Oracle and EMC products are brought to market they are proven solutions and hardened for real world use. In addition Oracle Engineering and support hold regular cadence of calls with EMC E-Lab to discuss product testing status, roadmap alignment and any open customer support issues.

EMC E-Lab has active relationships with Oracle development, one great example is PowerPath and its certification with Oracle Linux with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel and Oracle VM. EMC PowerPath is host-based software for automated data path management, failover and recovery, and optimized load balancing. PowerPath automates, standardizes, and optimizes data paths in physical and virtual environments as well as cloud deployments to deliver high availability and performance.

EMC E-Lab helps customers adopt new technologies by leveraging their validated solutions and processes. The E-Lab Platform team runs qualification cycles against Oracle Linux and Oracle VM when the beta is released to partners for testing. This qualification work is performed against VNXe, VNX, VPLEX, VMAX, and XtremIO. The testing is performed with DM-MPIO and PowerPath. During PowerPath release cycles, Oracle and EMC qualify the new release of PowerPath against these EMC storage platforms. When new releases of EMC storage or their storage operating environment become available, it kicks off qualification cycles with the current releases of Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. The end result of this exercise is the EMC Support Matrix. Read more details in this EMC article.

EMC has also published a VMAX Engineering White Paper last week, covering Oracle VM 3.3 Storage Connect for VMAX with EMC Storage Integrator V2.0.

We wish you Happy Holidays and the best for 2015.  We will return with Friday Spotlights on Jan 9.

Announcing General Availability of Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux

Today we announce the general availability of Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux 1.0. With this announcement we are now providing production OpenStack support to Oracle Linux and Oracle VM customers. The support for OpenStack is available as part of the Oracle Linux and Oracle VM Premier Support at no additional cost.

In December 2013 Oracle joined the OpenStack foundation, In May, during the OpenStack conference in Atlanta, we have released the technology preview version which was based on the Havana release. Since then we have refreshed the tech preview to support Icehouse and continued improving it by making install process simpler and fixing bugs. The GA release, which is available today, is based on the latest Icehouse release.

Our goal is to help make OpenStack an enterprise grade solution, capable of operating an entire datacenter including all types of workloads meeting all the requirements including reliability, security and performance. We would like OpenStack to become first class solution and the cloud operating system of choice for customers of any size. One of the ways Oracle can help make this a reality is to test and enable demanding enterprise workloads to run on OpenStack. Making sure that those workloads can run on OpenStack in a reliable and supported way is an important step in making OpenStack an enterprise grade, general purpose cloud management solution. With experience in deploying and managing enterprise workloads in virtual environment we are in a good position to drive such enabling activity forward, and that is what we plan to do.

Some resources and pointers to learn more about Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux:

  • Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux (aka O3L) is available for download from the Oracle Linux public yum repository at http://public-yum.oracle.com
  • The Oracle Technical Network (OTN) page for O3L is located here and includes documentation, links and also a virtualbox VM which has O3L fully installed, configured and ready to use on your own laptop
  • More information can also be found at http://www.oracle.com/goto/openstack including data sheet, an interview with Wim Coekaerts and more

Next week is Oracle OpenWorld, at OpenWorld we will showcase Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux 1.0 and also have sessions and hands on lab to discuss OpenStack, you are welcome to join us. Here are links to our sessions about OpenStack:

We discuss the upcoming OpenWorld sessions here.
